Police Foiled An Ohio Incel's Plot To Kill Women In A Mass Shooting, Prosecutors Say

    https://www.npr.org/2021/07/22/10190...-prosecutors-s

An Ohio man federal prosecutors say is an "incel" was charged in federal court this week with attempting a hate crime for his plot to kill women.

Tres Genco, 21, was arrested Wednesday and is also facing charges related to illegally possessing a machine gun, according to the Justice Department.

Prosecutors say Genco identified as an incel or an "involuntary celibate," a community of mostly men who harbor anger toward women who they believe owe them sexual or romantic attention. Some incels seek to commit violence to support this belief.

Genco's indictment includes startling detail of the months-long efforts prosecutors say he took to plan a mass shooting and to purchase weapons and other equipment to fulfill that goal.

According to the indictment reviewed by NPR, Genco maintained a profile on a popular incel website from at least July 2019 through mid-March 2020. He posted frequently on this site, it alleges.

In his posts, he sometimes expressed admiration for Elliot Rodger, who in May 2014, killed six people and injured 14 others. Some of Rodger's victims were shot outside a University of California, Santa Barbara sorority house.

Genco wrote a manifesto titled "A Hideous Symphony," by "Tres Genco, the socially exiled Incel." In it, he said he would "slaughter" women "out of hatred, jealousy and revenge..." and called death the "great equalizer." Investigators say they discovered another note, allegedly drafted by Genco, that said he hoped to "aim big" for a kill count of 3,000 people.
wtf is wrong with these people?

It's easier to become radicalized via the internet then to afford to see a counselor or psychologist in the United States. It's especially bad in states like Ohio with uber-reactionary politics, and rank in the top 5 states with the most extremist militia groups.
Populists (and "national socialists") look at the supposedly secret deals that run the world "behind the scenes". Child's play. Except that childishness is sinister in adults.

Unpopular opinion, but fuck it; society creates incels and needs to start showing positive feedback to kids in school, especially those on the spectrum.

Nobody is owed sex, but the incel problem starts way before sex before sex even becomes a thing. How do I know? I was well on my way in becoming one until someone pulled me out and invited me into her (not a girlfriend, friend) life, which made me get a social life and get out of the isolated life by the computer.

My story begins with lots of bullying and being ignored in elementary school, really all the way from first to ninth grade. Why? Because I have Asperger's, and kids are fucking mean to those who act different. I was a nice kid, probably too nice for my own good as people used it to gain things from me, but most of all I could be seen as "weird", which lead to people at best ignoring me and not really wanting to be friends with me, or at worst pure bullying.

The only people I became friends with were other misfits, like my ADHD friend, or my other friend who liked to laugh until snot ran out of his nose and he put it in his mouth.

Girls were impossible when sexual feelings started around 13, because I was "weird" and not like other kids, nobody wanted to date me. At most I got a pity kiss in a Swedish game called "Ryska posten" (Russian mail/post) or truth or dare. Some girls were kind towards me, though, but that was more a case of "Aaaw, I hate seeing him bullied, I'm gonna be nice to him " rather than they wanted to be friends or more. They were sympathetic, but not much.

In high school I applied to basically Nerd High. The focus was 3D animation and such, so there I fit well, but because we were all a bunch of nerds and the whole school having ONE girl, I got more isolated that way, with a rising thirst for sex.

Post-high school, when I entered the drinking and partying age of 18 I basically just sat there at a pub, miserable, because nobody talked to me. I still have this problem today, that I have a hard time taking initiative in group, so I just sat there and nobody talked to me. So I could sit there with both my friends at my side talking or making out with girls.

By this time bitterness to my situation had started. I never blamed anyone or got mad at anyone, but I was bitter and stand-offish (as in I never really let someone into my life because of past experiences). I isolated myself more and started to play more and more WoW, since the real world only gave me anxiety and such.

Then I met her, a girl who understood me and we became best friends. We were never dating, but I was just so glad to have a proper "normal" friend, because she took me out to the pub, socialized with me, introduced me to her friends and THEN one of her friends started to like me and I finally lost my virginity at 24 years of age. Since then things have been smoother, even though I'll never be a Casanova with the ladies. I'm fine with that, I've had a couple of girlfriends now and I'm happy.

My point is anyway that inceldom starts much earlier than when they lash out to women. Many incels are autistic, and like me they aren't seen at school and have very few friends, or they're seen as weird and nobody wants to hang out with them, which creates isolation, which leads to further isolation. Not everybody gets the lifeline I did by meeting, let's call her, Malin. She approached me, if she didn't I might very well have been a recluse.

Nobody has the right to sex or a relationship, but what I would want for people to do is to teach their kids that there is nothing wrong with people who are autistic, and that it's important, especially if they're introverted, that you show understanding. Invite them to play with you, sit by them and talk at the lunch break. I'm not saying you ned to become their best friend, but show them some human kindness instead of bullying or ignoring them just because they're "weird".

Incels who become violent only have themselves to blame, and it's their responsibility to not go Postal, but imo it's society's responsibility to teach kids that it's okay to be atypical, neurodivergent, and that they can be proper fun people to hang around with, if you give them a chance. Teach kids not to be scared of the different.

Inceldom doesn't start with hate towards women, it's a process (which naturally doesn't happen to everyone. I doubt I would've started hating women even if things kept going bad, but I would become more bitter and not respond much to people interacting with me) that often starts with bullying in school.

I'm certainly glad they stopped him, it would have been terrible had he been free to carry out his act.

I do have to admit when I read this I can't help but laugh at how pathetic these guys are, I hope they realise they'll never endear themselves to the social conscious by writing cringy shit like this.
Tonight for me is a special day. I want to go outside of the house of the girl I like with a gasoline barrel and write her name on the road and set it on fire and tell her to get out too see it (is this illegal)?

Imagine feeling like so much of a failure that you aspire to "kill 3000 people" and get caught before you get a single one. I hope he dies in jail feeling as pathetic as he appears.

Being in perpetual anger never satisfies. People need to let that shit go, I get their addicted to the anger, but addiction is no excuse for violence.

“Inside” has a song about the internet with the line “Here’s why women never fuck you, here’s how you can build a bomb.”

I really liked it but that song, “Welcome to the Internet” was really good.

It's just facing facts, women getting more rights was always going to spark a new and more violent form of misogyny. Add the internet with its many information bubbles, modern society and toxic ideals about what makes a man "A MAN!", and you have a nice recipe for radicalization.

Glad he was caught prior to doing it. The next one might not be, and there will be more.

Decent mental healthcare could probably do a lot for pathologically-entitled misogynist self-pity. Worth a try, in any case.

For guys like this case, honestly firing squad is worth more of a try. Some are far too dangerous to keep around and hope they reform.

I think a better solution would be to try to understand what makes these people tick, how they become radicalized, and ways to identify and help people before they get to this point.

That's all fine, but doesn't work on the radicalized ones, as they're obviously over the line already. There's a reason jihadists (as an example) aren't met by unarmed people holding bouquets of roses; but bombs. Point isn't to turn them back, but to remove the threat.

No one is suggesting we hand him roses, just that killing him isn't the answer. He's a kid, 21 years old, his brain hasn't even finished developing yet. Let's see if we can't help him while figuring out how we can help more people from becoming him.

Comments about killing him or others need to cease immediately. It's not appropriate.

Sorry, I don't buy your "he's just a kid" defense. 21 year old is old enough to have a family. Also, are you willing to pay the price should the help efforts fail?
