So on a single target boss is there a trick I need to do to ensure the boss gets hit? The ability seems very clunky

No it will hit the boss 99.99% of the time

has a fairly large hit box but i position myself between the boss as long as it doesn't mess with mechanics etc......

the chain does not have to go through the actual NPC if you are trying to hit 1 target, as long as it's going a long NPC's hitbox you're fine.

Pay attention to your character's positioning. Make sure you're facing the boss and are at an optimal distance for your attacks to connect. Some games have positioning requirements for certain abilities or weapons to land hits.
