Just because they don't allow you to switch after having made a choice doesn't change that both Advanced Classes are the same class.

They could easily do that. The fact that the two Advanced Classes fulfill different roles doesn't mean they are not part of the same class.

It's no different than in WoW with the Melee Survival Hunter and the Ranged Marksmanship Hunter.
Or the Melee Enhancement Shaman and the Ranged Elementary Shaman.
Or the Prot Paladin Tank and the Holy Paladin Healer.

Blizzard allows you to switch specs.

SWTOR doesn't. They easily could, but they want to make it look like they're different classes, when they are no different than specs in WoW.
you're arguing semantics. Advanced classes in SWTOR are the equivalent to classes in WOW

in your exemples, a hunter can be melee with survival or range with marksmanship, but will always be a hunter.
You cannot change a hunter into a shaman, back and forth at will. Once you have chosen the hunter class, you are stuck with the hunter class.
Similarly, a rogue cannot become a druid, or a warrior cannot become a paladin

And it's the same with SWTOR. If you choose to be a sniper, that's your class, sniper. You cannot be an operative, you can only be an sniper.
Now, blizzard allows you to chose between 3 specs for any given class (4 for druid i think), and so does SWTOR
You sniper is always a sniper, but has 3 specs, all range DPS, that plays differently, like a mage in wow for example.

The difference between wow and swtor is that in wow, your class does not have its proper story line. In SWTOR, classes have their story lines. sniper and operative are different classes, but share the same story line because they are both imperial agents.

Similarly, Vanguard and Commando are 2 different class, each with 3 specs, but share the same overarching story because they are elite soldier of the republic, in the same unit.

There are 8 uniques storylines, 4 for the alliance, and 4 for the empire. and for each storyline, you can chose between 2 classes to play it.
Now, that's the classic SWTOR, later expansions only have stories for the expansion, they no longer differ between classes unfortunately.
