...you'd rather burden the taxpayer by creating a bureaucracy to process children, potentially for years, than paying hundredths of a penny on the dollar to just feed the kid?

I've known that for a while. All systems have individuals that fall through the cracks. It's about filling in those gaps to make sure needs are being met! All schools should have free meal programs to make sure their students aren't going hungry.

Every feeding system instituted in the entire history of humankind includes some children that go hungry. It's not perfect, but it's fine. We have legal systems and social welfare systems in place to make sure this never happens. It still does.

There is of course, a better solution, and that is free meals for every student.
