Lyft And Uber Will Pay Drivers' Legal Fees If They're Sued Under Texas Abortion Law

Ride-hailing apps Lyft and Uber said they will cover all the legal fees of any of their drivers who are sued under Texas's restrictive new abortion law.

The law, which went into effect this week, bans abortions after about six weeks of pregnancy. It lets private citizens sue anyone who helps someone obtain an abortion, including by providing a ride to a clinic. That's raised concerns that ride-hailing drivers could be sued simply for transporting passengers.

"Drivers are never responsible for monitoring where their riders go or why. Imagine being a driver and not knowing if you are breaking the law by giving someone a ride," Lyft said in a statement on Friday.

"Similarly, riders never have to justify, or even share, where they are going and why. Imagine being a pregnant woman trying to get to a healthcare appointment and not knowing if your driver will cancel on you for fear of breaking a law. Both are completely unacceptable."

The statement was signed by Lyft CEO Logan Green, President John Zimmer and General Counsel Kristin Sverchek.

Not much else to say. At the end, they are still San Francisco companies.

The Texas-based dating app Bumble said this week it's creating a fund to support reproductive rights and help people seeking abortions in the state. The CEO of Match, which owns dating apps including Tinder and is also based in Texas, said she would personally create a fund to help employees and their dependents who are affected by the law.

Even dating app company is against the law? There must be some significance there.

This alone is the sole thing I think might rouse action by congress and Democrats might actually work to change how the supreme court works or even end the filibuster. After all there is nothing dearer or more precious to Democrats than abortion as a legal right. Liberals may be mealy mouthed about Health Care, or Housing, or Wages, or anything like that, but abortion actually is something they do care about. They will fight tooth and nail for the one thing a good chunk of the country considers to be infanticide.

If you want to call 15-20% "a good chunk" then sure. That is no small amount of people who outright oppose all abortion. But it's certainly not enough to be considered a demographic that could ever feasibly get roe vs wade overturned. The vast majority of the country believes abortion should be legal at least in some form.

Though of course, we know that access to proper sex education, free reproductive health care, and other measures dramatically reduce abortions and unwanted teen pregnancies. If these people actually considered abortion infanticide, you'd think they'd be for reducing the need to get abortions. But no. They're the same people who believe "abstinence only" parenting to be the best way to get their daughters knocked up at 14 raise their children.

GOP senator on Texas abortion law: Supreme Court will 'swat it away' when 'it comes to them in an appropriate manner'

Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-La.) said on Sunday that he believes the Supreme Court will "swat" away a law in Texas that effectively banned abortions after six weeks of pregnancy because the high court's ruling last week was based on standing and not on the law's constitutionality.

"The ruling on SCOTUS was that the plaintiffs did not have standing. It had nothing to do with the constitutionality of Roe v. Wade," Cassidy told ABC "This Week" host George Stephanopoulos.

Those words ring a bit hollow after the daily hand brushing of the pandemic by the right and even if you feel that way. Do you think putting $10,000 bounties on pregnant women who are the victims of rape and incest is the way to go?

These laws are almost exclusively pushed by religious fundamentalists. And if said religious fundamentalists actually believed abortions constituted "killing babies," they would pass laws that criminalized the practice accordingly. But they don't, so they don't.
