Lightbulb WTF is Happening in Texas? 666 New Laws in Effect Today

666 new Texas laws go into effect September 1.
These laws include abortion restriction, permitless carry, criminalizing homeless camping and whitewashing history.

The legislature is currently in its second special session, which Abbott primarily called to advance the GOP-backed voting restrictions bill. Lawmakers are discussing other topics, including changes to the bail system and limits on transgender Texans from competing on school sports teams. At least one more special session will be called this fall to address redistricting.

I don’t understand how big cooperation that are eying Texas as a place to HQ. Well who needs rights when your company's investors gets targeted tax rebates.

If I was writing a story about this and sent it to my editor, they'd tell me to piss off and write something less on the nose.

Pretty simple... Texas is dead last in personal freedom. This is something that would surprise most people, but Texas has long had a shit record in that way. That's what's funny about all the people who moved from California to Texas, they were sacrificing their personal freedoms for economic ones.

Companies don't give a shit about personal freedom, they care about corporate freedom, which Texas has over California. The employees are simply too ignorant to realize that such freedoms don't really translate to them.

Second, oh man I cannot get over the hilarious coincidence of Texas, quite a religious state with a very religious Legislature, having the NUMBER OF THE BEAST as the number of laws going into effect on a single day. It's just too on the nose.

the state that refused to free the slaves in it's borders to where we have to mark the occasion for when they finally DID is once again living up to the old traditions of conservative authoritarianism. freedom for me and none for thee.

Just more evidence that the right wing doesn't actually care about freedom as a universal ideal.

There's a local saying that goes: "Keep Austin Weird"

People from Portland will claim this phrase was stolen from them. But everyone else knows they just stole it from Seattle.

Conservatism is just pointless cruelty. There's no real substance to it aside from that.
Populists (and "national socialists") look at the supposedly secret deals that run the world "behind the scenes". Child's play. Except that childishness is sinister in adults.

I dont think it's pointless. That phrasing gives them the slightest hint of plausible deniability, which they dont deserve.

I find myself agreeing with Adam Sewer, The Cruelty Is the Point
President Trump and his supporters find community by rejoicing in the suffering of those they hate and fear.

Like focusing on the Abortion Bill, aside from being morally reprehensible - as most of these bills tend to be - it's also hilariously unconstitutional?

Like for one, it allows these 'Concerned Citizens' to rat out people they think/suspected got 'Illegal' Abortions before the law came into effect. And secondly it deliberately denies recompense to defendants that are found innocent, while - possibly - rewarding accusers by recouping lawyer fees in addition to whatever bounty they collect from their witch hunt.

Hell, the accusers don't even have to -live- in the State, which to me just screams that this entire law is nothing more than a way for the Right Wing to legally weaponize their army of reactionary shitheads to harass people.

It's a very self-only "Freedom" in Texas that conservatives want. It's Freedom to do whatever they want, while restricting what others do. Wearing a mask to them is an incredible infringement on their rights. But at the same time they think it's ok to control what women do, what couples do behind closed doors in their own home. Super-hypocritical. There's a reason Joel Osteen is so popular in Texas, his hypocrisy fits their lifestyle.

Drive a fancy car and live in an expensive home, bash others, do everything possible to make sure the poor and downtrodden have harder lives, but tell yourself you are living by the book. Joel Osteen keeping his church closed to the needy during the Texas power outages was just an example of how they live, in complete denial that they live completely contrary to every NT teaching in the religion.

Separately, I'm very surprised SCOTUS is letting this end around fly. It bypassed the Federal Court system and is a massive infringement of rights on regular citizens since the lawsuit thing is so incredibly wide open. You'd think SCOTUS would admonish the crap out of Texas for even trying to exceed their power to such a degree. It even usurps the Supreme Court to tell states it is ok to write laws that are this insane and just not rule on them to passively give approval. This IS the kind of thing that will actually lead to an expansion of the court, to prevent a small majority from completely screwing up the country. And before conservatives celebrate, just ponder for 1 moment the Pandora's Box this opens (and why one way or another, even if SCOTUS expansion is needed, I don't think it will stick). Any blue state, say Colorado, enable the exact same law but replace assisting abortion with bypassing COVID restrictions. No mask, fake vaxx cards, lying about being vaxxed, $10k fine for assisting, and no court fees if they lose. It can easily now make anti-mask/anti-vaxxers lives equally hellish. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. Gun rights? How about a $10k fine for giving someone a ride to a gun shop. This is going to be fun.

I know people worship RBG, but this highlights how selfish and stupid it was of her to not retire earlier. It also highlights the stupidity of people that didn't bother voting in 2016 that would have voted for Clinton.

Democrats do this kind of thing to themselves time and time again. They never fucking learn. They're doing it again even now regarding issues like voting rights. Republicans are playing a completely different game while dems twiddle their thumbs.

A lot of lefties are gonna blame republicans for what's happening in Texas, but no. This is exactly what we already knew they wanted to do. There's no surprise here. This is happening because dems lack spine. It's always been a problem of theirs for at least my entire adult life.

RBG was already around 80 partway through Obama's first term. That's plenty old enough to retire. Honestly, she should have retired shortly after Obama won his first term. She was in her late 70s at that point. There's no reason for her to continue other than pure selfishness.

It's happening right now with Breyer. We are now suffering the consequences of RBG's mistake and Breyer is repeating it. Maybe this will wake him up and cause him to actually put the country first instead of his own desires? Who knows.

You people really need to stop believing that right-wingers have any consistency, intellectual or otherwise.

They will happily rule to uphold these Texas laws, then turn right around to strike down your theoretically Colorado law. And it is arguable whether they will even be capable of recognizing the contradiction in those two acts.

Warning : Above post may contain snark and/or sarcasm. Try reparsing with the /s argument before replying.

this argument angle leaves out a very important context, the democrats aren't a unified cult like the republicans are.

Businesses go to the best places to do business. Banning product distribution to certain states and moving headquarters in response to Twitter mobs or social and political pressure is something relatively new.

And not all businesses are vigilantly pro-choice, pro-COVID-voting-procedures, anti-gun, trans-activist. I surmise this is the point behind the point: OP wishes every corporation in America had Democratic-progressive political leanings and put their business in the position of advocacy.
"I wish it need not have happened in my time." "So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us."

It's the biggest tell that they're new, when they assume they're the default. They constantly overlook the numerous factions within the Dem party. They also assume their also the smartest among all the factions. Despite lacking basic knowledge or experience of the other groups. Or even knowing when a primary is being held.

Checking that last bit of priviledge ... is the hardest.

Certain Dem factions DiD approach RGB about retirement. Obama even broached it during a lunch. Erasing their work is not helping. "All Dems are stupid" is the cheat code to collecting clout and likes online.
Progressive outcomes will always require work, not cheats.
