It feels like the implication is because McCree's old name was tied to Blackwatch, which was considered a dark side of Overwatch now, he's renaming himself in an attempt to create a better Overwatch.

Which I supposed will fit in with the story of Overwatch 2, since it's been a hot minute since they've pointed out that Overwatch fell because it was considered a corrupt entity.

Self inserts is nothing new in games, or other media. Or do you somehow expect people to predict the future of what was going to happen? They make the game, so they are free to do what they want - and they didn´t do anything wrong at the time by naming them that way. Fans are however easily disaapointed.

Not to mention McCree isn´t a unique cowboy name.” Oddly” enough the character from overwatch look pretty much identical to that other McCree game character.
