The Kremlin is saying that the full resumption of gas supplies through NS1 will not take place until the 'collective west' lifts sanctions on Moscow over its invasion of Ukraine.

They're trying to weaponize gas deliveries to Europe short term while they still can, cause the writing is the wall for most of the rest of Europe disconnecting itself from Russian energy permanently, and they know it too.

Europe just needs get through this coming winter without budging, and Russia's gas sector is properly buggered.

    Referendum postponed in Kherson.

I suppose the russians are getting a bit panicky in the Kherson region.

For once russians are speaking the truth - security issues. Damn fucking right, invaders are not safe anywhere in Ukraine and its rightful regions.

Panicky is probably underselling it. From what's on maps from ISW there's a pretty sizeable salient forming in the Russian line a bit further north of Kherson, possibly threatening an encirclement of Ruskies against the river if they can build on that momentum down to Nova Kakhovka

This map is what some people think is going on - and you can see why the Russkies are worried if it is true.

One of the confirmed places taken in the north of Kherson is Vysokopilia - and Russian miliblogs are sort of losing it over the fact as it was one of their main defensive positions along the front and Russian troops pretty much gave it up without a fight. Also lot of chatter from Russian sources that not just air support is lacking but artillery support is as well.

Poor bastards, don't get me wrong they shouldn't be there, but this reeks of being abandoned by the higher ups and that's not something I'd wish for anyone giving their lives for their country, no matter how misguided.

Alternatively, russia is out of ammo, fuel and other things.

Hopefully some do the smart thing and just surrender, if this is true of course.

Russia has given up all pretence that the Nord Stream supply is due to technical issues.

They stepped over the border all on their own.

To no one's surprise, really, but it's still amazing to me just how shameless they are. It's like lying and dishonesty is instinctual to them. How can you treat with someone who always lies (and by extension, likely assumes everyone else acts the same way too)?

That's the thing. They know everyone else at least tries to stick to their word, and ruthlessly exploit this.

You move to the point when you are no longer freezing their assets but start seizing them.

If there is any doubt that Russia is weaponising gas, then Gazprom just put out a video saying that "winter will be big...ice age begins in Europe." Ignoring the facts that Europe has been building up gas supplies for winter and winter is also meant to be milder this year. Winter is coming, but so is spring for Europe. There will be no spring for Russia.

What is hilarious is that they think that winter will break Europe before it breaks their unprepared army. NATO (and Finland and Sweden) are promising 200,000 winter kits, which includes clothing, tents, sleeping bags etc. If Sweden and Finland are involved then you know it will be good. Russia is having supply issues already and winter will just make it worse. Having seen some of the camps in Kherson that Ukraine has over run, the Russian troops are living in badly prepared positions filled with squalor. Western soldiers (wether current or former) who have seen them have said it shows the lack of morale, disciple, leadership and more in the Russian army. Maybe in a surprising turn of events Russia will actually properly supply their troops for winter, but that would be a shock based on current evidence. Hopefully we will see a repeat of the winter of 41/42 that the Germans went through. Or better, a repeat of Napoleon's disastrous retreat from Moscow.

Oh, and further on the manpower issue Russia is having. They've spent their regular forces. They've tried volunteers, mass conscription in the occupied territories, they've been emptying prisons. The latest is they are attempting to recruit from a mental health unit in St Petersburg. No joke. They want send people already suffering mental health issues into a meatgrinder. You have to wonder whether it is just an effort to purge society of 'undesirable' elements like Nazi Germany did and so they no longer have to pay for them.

    To add to above.

    https://www.bloomberg.com/news/artic...l-report-warns

Bloomberg got access to confidential, internal economic report in Russia.

I guess our resident troll(s) were strictly on need-to-know basis about Russia's stronk economy and they were huffing copium & hopium like it was the last day on Earth

Oh no. B-b-but surely West will collapse, people freeze to death?? Russia stronk!

Seems like Russia is running low of artillery ammo as they are buying millions of shells and rockets from North Korea.

And it seems they are having problems with tanks as well, as the Russia MoD has announced plans to set up two new plants to repair armoured vehicles.

You know, setting up repair facilities is the sort of thing you would think you would want to do before you start a war to make sure they are operational in time to make sure that you can keep your armor in action.

    Yea… it’s nothing but a propaganda statement.

Setting up such facilities could take a year. And that’s assuming they could obtain materials and parts needed to repair anything, which they likely don’t.

On top of that the choice for “repair” instead of “produce” is another one to make you laugh.

I’m slightly hopeful the war’s over by spring. Ukraine is pushing hard (hope they can keep it up) and Russian troops are in for an ill supplied winter.

Russia now needs to move millions of shells over thousands of kilometers of the Trans-Siberian Railway.

You got a nice railway there. Be a shame if something happened to it.
