even with 500k people you still have to attempt some sort of combined arms assaults which seem incredibly difficult for the Russians.

Look at what Wagner are reduced too.

They vaguely locate a Ukranian trench. Send men 8 at a time to go and try taking it. 1st wave = 8 men with grenades + maybe 1 thermometric weapon if they are lucky. They run as close to the line as they dare, attack and immediately dig in, if they retreat and fail the objective they are shot. Then the 2nd wave of 8 charge into their dug out position and whoever survives tries to call in artillery danger close, they are then meant to storm the trench as soon as the last shell is fired some times during. Wagnerites have reported up to 24 waves of 8 just to take one trench. Thats alot of dead Russians. This is only viable for them because they are sending Russian prison fodder, a mix of murders and pedos. I doubt mobiks would tolerate this.

WWI is really the apt comparison here. This Putinist, casualty-heavy approach works, but only on a very small scale. It involves trading hundreds or thousands of lives for incremental gains that are easily measured in meters, not kilometers. This probably looks good to the nascent warlords competing to produce good news to report back to the imperial court in Moscow, but militarily it's of very minimal utility.

In theory, it can wear down Ukrainian defence gradually, until the orcs either get lucky or exhaust the defenders and finally get a breakthrough. In practice, I'm skeptical that breakthrough will happen and that the orcs will be able to exploit it usefully if it does. It feels like Putin's generals have come to realize that they're incapable of successful combined-arms maneuver warfare, so they're engaging in these sorts of Pyrrhic assaults so that they can be seen to be doing something, and hoping events go in their favor.

Right this is true but Ukraine still calls it a war. The victim of aggression does not need to formally declare war.

Assumedly yes (the UN charter generally doesn't allow wars - but says that countries may defend themselves alone or with others, whereas it is the earlier Hague convention that states that war shall be declared; neither has any meaningful penalties for violating it), but my point that that declaration of war is rarely used nowadays still stands.

The reason Ukraine hasn't declared war on the invading Russians is, of course, fairly obvious when you think about it - it wouldn't give any benefit and only give Ruzzians another confused reason for their undeclared war.

If Republican lawmakers are apathetic to Ukraine, this gives their corporate backers who ultimately tell them what to do when it comes to actual policy incentive to push them towards Ukrainian support.
