I would not be surprised at all if after the first leak some additional misinformation was leaked to muddy the waters, and that one seems a prime candidate. We know just how massively paranoid pootie is, so dropping something like that to spread discord and distrust would be a smart play.

Even if not true, those named are going to wonder if their paranoid boss might decide not to take any chances.

That thought crossed my mind as well, the problem of course for putin is that IF it is true then he lost the support of the army AND of the security forces as neither of these two individuals would act in a vacuum and the chances of a coup increase if he moves against them. It is very well possible that, again if true, they wanted to replace him during chemo in order to make the transition as smooth as possible, and now they'll be forced to have a transition which is more bumpy.

Of course, that all hinges on it being true.
