So.. listening to Roger Bolton on BBC R4: 3m Americans have some sort of 'security clearance'.

Slight flaw in the system? No?

Not to get too off topic but - https://www.npr.org/2023/01/19/11499...ication-engine

Is a very good interview on the topic. TLDR: Yes, we classify far, far, far too many things and our processes for it are bad and outdated.

No, because that completely ignores the varies levels of clearance and how they work.
It ignores such insignificant forces as time, entropy, and death

Fair dues.... was playing devil's adovcate.

    I've got no idea.

Just seems daft this has happened so easily. Again.

    Weird take.

    Whistle blower =/= leaker.

    There's a meaningful distinction.

She was neither pardoned or treated fairly. Spent 7 years in confinement and her sentence was committed to time spent in confinement.

Are you claiming there's an equivalency between revealing that the US has been covering up war crimes and leaking information about Ukrainian defense efforts.

If you work in a Northrop Grumman factory or a SiG factory that makes side arms for the army, cleaning toilets you have some level of "security clearance".

The effective difference between a commute down to the time a person already served and a pardon isn't exactly massive.

I'm sure there is a legal difference, but de facto, i'm not so sure.

No, but straight up assuming a person gets a very light sentence and a pardon on top of that seems a bit odd when also talking about a person who was convicted of similar crimes and had their sentence commuted down to an effective immediate release.

Putting aside that Mannings leaks made Assange a household name, who years later only happened to have dirt on democrats but nothing on Republicans during the 2016 election.

for the record i think snowden manning did the wrong thing and prosecuted
by there is a moral difference in " the government is doing these bad things to civilians whether its war crimes/spying" and " im leaking these documents for the lulz in a discord group"and thats all we know so far, but i suspect it may come out that the leaker had pro russia sympathies related to his " god and guns" politics, in the end i guess not much different than snowden/manning because their leaks were also used in furthering russias agenda in the end

Not really, some kind of security clearance is as small as working in a factory that builds anything related to the military. Civil servants or anything of the like. That's still under 1% of the US public as well

I think there is a difference, but it's in my mind also disingenuous to blatantly assume that a person who aided Russia intentionally or unintentionally gets a very light sentence and possibly a pardon in direct response to a person that has received a commute.

It also disregards the actual content, Snowden / Manning leaks (as far as i know) contained very touchy information, whereas in this instance, at least Biden said that he's more concerned about the existence of the leak than the actual content.
Whether that's true, remains to be seen, but it's also something that needs to be taken into account.

    His leaks weren't party affiliated.

Your positions are sometimes really fucking disgusting. Will you bootlick the US government when they herd minorities into death camps and waterboard "Antifa terrorists" under the next GOP administration?
He isn't a whistleblower. Leaking battle plans for any country, including ours, is being a fucking traitor. Plus, his discord he leaked them on, is full of right wing propaganda and racism.

Bethesda appears to have removed russian language support for the upcoming Starfield game. Needs to happen more.

rrooofffllllll that chud leaker is so dumb

But one of the investigators on the case said Teixeira gave himself away through his Steam profile—it led to an Instagram account with photos that the investigation team was able to match to the location the leaked documents were photographed before being uploaded.

    Edward Snowden?

Snowden didn't leak any battle plans of any kind. Are you remotely aware what Snowden leaked? Like at all?

    Please google it.

What happened to the GOP? No, seriously I know they're a bunch of reactionary right wing shit heads but one thing you could count on was them at least being on the same page when it came to russia. (Yes, yes, I know it didn't change yesterday or overnight.)

I've asked it before but I just remain surprised by this behaviour.

they dont think they can win elections in a democracy and refuse to change their platform to attract new votes. They would like a system like Putins Russia (or even Xi's China, Orbans Hungary etc) where elections are a sham and they always maintain control.

Well, I wasn't. My post was specifically saying that there's no comparision between this leak and the Snowden leaks and that people need to be able to draw a distinction and not go either "All leaks good!" or "All leaks evil".

That individual in particular linked to is one of the most extreme representatives the GOP has in US congress, just for the record.

When Republicans become convinced their voter prospects are terrible, they don’t abandon their unhinged views but supporting democracy, which is a very dangerous development for the US.

That, and there’s a good chance MTG is complicit in helping to organise what went down in congress on January 6th 2021.

Are you really surprised? She was the loudest "Trump won, elections were rigged" conspiracy theory supporter since the beginning. This is just one of her normal tweets. And regarding Russia, let's not forget how loud Trump and his MAGAs were applauding when ruskies were hacking gov accounts and meddling with the election. And now the "was is not our problem, Ukraine started it" is their everyday rhetoric. Expect more to come from these fine political specimens, with how much GOP had to appeal to those loons to finally get the Speaker elected.

What happened to GOP? Trump happened. They are now hostages to his unhinged followers and their votes.

Sometimes, the light of the moon is a key to other spaces. I've found a place where, for a night or two, the streets curve in unfamiliar ways. If I walk here, I might find insight, or I might be touched by madness.
