It's shocking because if this is true, that means Putin is not being shielded by Western officials to make sure the conflict doesn't escalate past their liking.

Long answer: No, but if this new partisan group somehow manages to roll into the Kremlin - we meme about their army but the partisans are still hilariously outnumbered and outgunned in the long run - and catches Putin before he can scuttle into a bunker somewhere, the west will probably only get involved if the new 'ruling' party wants to swing their new nuclear dick around.

Otherwise I think the west would be fine with letting them burn out in a Civil war while focusing on getting Ukraine back up and running.

Their purpose is to start the fire. The idea is that once people see that God bleeds, more and more will rise up and then it will become a massive movement that even the regular army joins, and then it's over for Putin.

Of course no one expects a couple hundred revolutionaries to march into Kremlin.

In the latest stage of gaffes, Putin attempted to show on an old map that Ukraine didn't exist as a state in the past and it's just a construct of the USSR, only to have people pointing out that it does say "Ukraine" on that map. Guessing someone later on fell from a window for suggesting this stunt to glorious leader.

From what I read about Wagner they are a primarily light non mechanized infantry force. Good for the type of fighting in Bakhmut, but not really suitable for dealing with something like the potential upcoming Ukrainian offensive, which is predicted to be pretty heavily mechanized.

My suspicion is that they'll soon pop up around Vuhledar.

Say Putin is assassinated and Ukraine claims credit. I don't think that will make them look good on the world stage, especially in a world shifting to authoritarianism as rapidly as it has. The right-wing, especially those in the US, would go ballistic and condemn Ukraine as well as try to drop support for them.

So it's a polarizing move.

They'll be a lot of trolling on Twitter and "hint hint nudge nudge wink wink" from mid level officials, but the Ukrainian government will categorically deny any involvement. Even if Zelensky personally offed Pootie, they'll still deny it.

Or if they find him wounded on the floor the leadership will do what the Soviet leadership did when they found Stalin ill after his collapse from likely a stroke but saveable. Everyone who could call for doctors got around and basically said "Let him die." and pushed for a new direction.
