I mean, weren't there famously some people who would, in WW2 Britain, go out and steal from homes whenever the air raid sirens sounded and people were in shelters?

Its not just the meatgrinder in itself, but that well over a million Russians of an age to be in the workforce has fled the country, many of them young and reasonably well educated. That sort of blow is not easily compensated for in the economy.

Russia has been an impoverished country ruled by iron-fisted despots and warlords since its inception.

It's not really that surprising a lot of its citizens are opportunistic scavengers that will steal if they can.

An investigation carried out by an international nonprofit law firm in partnership with Ukrainian prosecutors has accused Russian forces of using starvation as a weapon of war against Ukrainian civilians during the early stages of Moscow's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

The "Starvation Mobile Justice Team team," from the Global Rights Compliance human rights law firm, which is working in partnership with the office of Ukraine's prosecutor general, said Friday that its investigation had focused largely on "starvation tactics" allegedly used by Russian forces in Chernihiv, a northern region that came under siege during the first three months of the invasion.

"From our initial investigations into Russia's starvation crimes in Ukraine, the evidence is pointing towards a deliberate plan carefully designed to undermine and attack the very foundation and societal fabric of Ukrainians, subjecting them to inhumane living conditions," said Catriona Murdoch, a British lawyer who led the team.

The investigators accused Russia of using various methods to cut off Ukrainian civilians' access to food and water.

"Armed sieges, obstruction of humanitarian access, pillaging of agricultural machinery and harvests, shelling of objects indispensable to the survival of the civilian population, and the blockade of ports and grain, are among barbaric starvation tactics being used by (Russian President Vladimir) Putin and his forces to break the Ukrainian people," the investigators said.

They were complaining on state TV the other day some cities had run out of men. Meanwhile they have record employment. That is not a good thing. It means they are having trouble finding workers to fill positions, and having even more trouble finding competent workers.

When you consider the fled, the dead and crippled and those mobilised who are soon to be dead and wounded, you've probably pulled a couple of million workers out of their jobs, soon after loosing another million+ to covid.

Ukraine's demands for peace and forgiveness

    • Immediate return of all kidnapped Ukranian nationals.

    • Immediate release of all POWS.

    • Reparations for every Ukranian and foreign legion life that was lost.

    • Reparations for every building and area destroyed.

    • Repayment to all NATO countries for the equipment sent to Ukraine.

    • Russia must pay for and provide the personnel to demine all of Ukraine while paying for any future injuries and deaths due to mines.

    • Russia must acknowledge and not interfere with Ukraine re-acquiring nuclear weapons should Ukraine decide to pursue it.

    • Russia cannot lodge protest or any action towards Ukranian ascension to NATO.

    • Russia must acknowledge all lands and borders of Ukraine pre-2014 as sovereign Ukranian land and relinquish all past, present and future claims.

    -----

Russia will never agree to this, they'd rather die.

You do realise first demands of any peace deal pretty much gets watered down right?

The sad thing is 90% of what Russia does is standard outside of NATO and Western NATO-aligned nations. Yet I don't see Yuppie over the last decade and a half screaming how we should have started a war against the Saudis after their brutality in Yemen, India/Pakistan during their clashes or any other conflict around the world.

These are called maximalist starting points for future negotiations, this is not something Ukraine seriously expects to obtain and several of the points are there essentially to be easily negotiated away. Like the compensation for veterans and casualties and the repayment of NATO aid or the nuclear weapons clause.

Russia can easily agree to the first two points, Ukraine will drop most of the others and only really the last two points will be a point of real contention as they are also essentially interlinked.

Agreeing to the second to last doesn't mean anything if Ukraine's territory remains in dispute as that would automatically prevent Ukrainian NATO membership.

The real pickle for the Russians will be giving up territorial claims in Ukraine.

For Russia to agree to that, it would first have to be very soundly beaten on the battlefield and possibly evicted from the whole of Ukraine by force, or the Putin regime would have to collapse and be replaced by a less nationalistic alternative, which is unlikely.

So really the only thing on that list that wouldn't be automatically granted or discarded and would be truly negotiated is the final point.

And I'm pretty sure that that's the one both countries care most about. Ukraine because it's their sovereign territory that they have every right to... and Russia because they're a bunch of feckless thieves who think they deserve some "compensation for their efforts."

Though I will say that the NATO membership (or a similar defense pact with other nations) is probably high on Ukraine's priorities, seeing as we know Russia's word not to just attack again is worth less than the paper it'd be written on.

Ukraine has been alluding to what can only be described as an all-out counteroffensive for a while now, and according to the article, it's coming very soon. Zelenksy even implies it will be something like out of a movie, though advises people to not think of it as such.

The loss of Russian lives relative to Ukrainian losses will be immense because of how one-sided this counteroffensive will appear to be.

it's not a movie (again), or as Zelenksy said multiple times before, not for people's entertainment.

So on other news, it seems like Olaf Schulz is trying to make permanent enemies of Putin. He made a grandiose speech welled with anger calling Putin a killer, warmonger, you name it
