A few months ago someone asked me why Putin didn't eliminate Prigozhin, since he was stirring shit up even then. I told them that Wagner numbers around 50.000 well trained troops, not conscripts, and it represents an enormous part of Russia's armed forces potential. To eliminate Prigozhin would be suicide for the MoD given everything in Ukraine.

But apparently the Russian MoD tried to do so.

Man, Russia starting a civil war on a Friday so the world has the weekend to watch (sorry folks working this weekend, we appreciate your sacrifice) is really considerate of them.

I imagine a lot of Russia stans are pretty quiet right about now. I just hope Wagner and the FSB etc. mostly keep the killing to each other and whatnot. But hey, it's Russia, so high likelihood of intentional civilian casualties.

Interesting development but I doubt this will make a difference for the Counter Offensive. For starters this isn't a civil war, give up on that narrative unless you are memeing. Wagner is mostly withdrawn from Ukraine and the major road block for Ukraine atm is that Russian defensive lines have been built to a good standard and Ukraine has no answer to Russian air power. Unless Wagner manages to cripple the Russian Air Force in it's death throes then Russia losing more of it's low quality infantry doesn't make any difference to the conflict.

I know people have found it hard to imagine that Prigozhin has been able to publicly slam the Russian state over and over without sanction but that's been his role in Russian propaganda, so long as he kept deflecting blame from Putin onto the Russian Military leadership then that was fine. Even his latest messaging still avoids laying any blame at Putin's feet. I guess what's gone wrong is that Putin has finally decided it's more advantageous to go all in on Shoigu than keeping up the circus of these public disputes.

It's a shame that something as juicy as this won't really make much difference but at least we can all wish Prig the best in taking out as much Russian hardware as possible during his self immolation.

Moving on Rostov makes a lot of sense. It is very close to Ukraine, on the Sea of Azov, so easy to get to. It is also where the senior brass, including Shoigu, are running the war, and they are the ones the Prig is after.

It is also a very major logistics and supply hub, which the Prig would need to continue to fight. It also has the added bonus of seriously interrupting the supply to russian troops in Ukraine.

Damn, now there are reports that not only are Wagner in Rostov but have surrounded the southern military district HQ. the video of tanks in Rostov show them pointing their guns at the building, which would be a strange way to defend it.

Wonder if the Prig actually will go through with his threat to hang generals.

To be fair--not that they deserve it--you would 100% see that in the US and UK as well. Hell, probably just about any 1st world country that hasn't seen war in their borders in the past couple decades. It's a spectacle to them; like a parade. Until the shooting starts.

Wagner now say they have captured SMD HQ.

They claim to have captured the entire city and have surrounded various important buildings including the SMDHQ, FSB Office, Police etc.

Fights have been reported near Voronezh, the Army has send Jets and Helicopters, Wagner claims to have shot two of the latter.

This was certainly preplanned. Yesterday (22nd) Wagner people were phoning home telling their loved ones to stay away from important areas.

I should also point out that 22nd is the anniversary of Operation Barbarossa. Coincidence that everything is happening around that anniversary.
