There have been countless instances where you personally have referred to the United States as "America" despite it being about as correct as referring to the USSR as "Russia", so climb off the high horse.

As Russia is not really the same as USSR. Yeah, I think the precision was worth it and even more as the Pact of Warsaw (and not Russia) was a response to the creation of NATO.

Drop the pedantry buddy, the USSR were effectively a reorganisation of the Russian Empire in practise, absolutely everyone understands already what it means to refer to it as Russia in pre 1991 contexts when talking about NATO.
