News has been pretty light lately, thanks in part to Isreal sucking the world's attention up faster than a ballistic missile falling on Iran.
The big one today has Ukraine has pulled it troops out from Vuhledar. Its a big setback, but better alive than... well..
Ukraine accuses Russia of executing 16 PoWs on eastern front
russia continues to reach the depths of depravity and spit in the face of every globally agreed to arrangement.Authorities in Ukraine have launched an investigation into what they said was the apparent summary execution by Russian troops of 16 Ukrainian soldiers who had surrendered on the eastern frontline.
“This is the largest reported case of the execution of Ukrainian PoWs on the frontline and yet another indication that the killing and torture of prisoners of war are not isolated incidents,” Ukraine’s prosecutor general, Andriy Kostin, said on X. “This is a deliberate policy of the Russian military and political leadership.”
Moscow did not immediately comment on the accusations. The Kremlin denies that Russia commits war crimes in Ukraine.

Russia is about to face the moment of truth on an economic lifeline from China
But probably won't amount to much.China's yuan is the most traded foreign currency in Russia, but its availability in the heavily sanctioned country may soon dry up.
That would threaten a critical lifeline for Russian businesses, which became heavily reliant on the yuan as trade with China ramped up after President Vladimir Putin ordered the invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The war triggered Western sanctions that largely shut out Russia from the global financial system.
In June, the U.S. expanded its sanctions, forcing the Moscow Exchange and its clearing agent to halt trading in dollars and euros. A Treasury Department license that allows time for some transactions to wind down will expire on Oct. 12.
While Russia had already shifted away from Western currencies in favor of the yuan, the additional U.S. sanctions could have spillover effects on Chinese banks that engage in yuan transactions with Russia.
"The situation may change after Oct. 12," a source told Reuters. "An abrupt shortage of yuan or a complete refusal to accept payments from Russia by Chinese banks is possible."
Oh and btw, Zelenskys victory plan wasn't made public, but it didn't seem to have the effect Ukraine had hoped for. I was really hoping it was full of strategies and targets and an endgame plan. Guess not.
Russia's central bank is worried they are heading towards stagflation.

Here's the MSN repost of the article.
Also, Russia announced the other day that they're increasing the "defense" budget by 30% for next year, so...

Putin seems to be running the same playbook, so...
Unfortunately for Russia, their military "might", like their playbook, is a bit dated.

Also, that increased military budget is now 40% of their government spending.
At its highest in the last 50 years, the US was still under 30%. These days, we're more in the 10-15% range.

Throw in internal security and it's pushing 50%. And that is not counting the burden being shifted to the regional governments as well.
I've seen a few posts alleging that Solovyov called for the resignation of putin. Kinda, he said something along the lines of that those responsible for the failures needed to resign, and if that means the resignation of the Supreme Commander in Chief he'd understand that. (That would be putin)
I don't speak russian so I can't judge the specific clip I saw and am reliant on the translation.
But let's for a moment assume it's correctly translated, wouldn't that indicate a big issue for putin? Since nothing is said on russian propaganda channels without support from the powers that be, and I don't think Solovyov would be brave enough to take that fall without backup.

Only for the impact crater (I know there's no building tall enough for that.)
So, I guess russian demographics have collapsed as Putin scraps census

There are also reports that 6 north Korean officers were killed in occupied Donetsk from a Ukrainian missile strike while they were meeting with russian officers to be shown demonstrations of russian assault tactics.
I guess they got the full experience.
Sweet Jesus when those demographic numbers finally come out.
One of the many many reasons this war must end with ironclad security guarantees for Ukraine, like full NATO and EU membership, is so they can actually get an economic rebound that would permit a demographic one.
Russian population has been on the slow decline since the dissolution of the USSR. Taking into account the horrible Russian response to COVID running right up against the impact of the war in both overt losses as well as the "brain drain" as people flee the country, it's not looking good for Russia.
Then again, this is almost not even news, considering they've only actually had three censuses since the Soviet breakup in 1991.
