    To be fair, it also costs a lot of money to do a census.

    Have you seen how the Russian economy is doing lately?

    Besides, that money would likely have to be carved out of the military budget at this point, since all the other government spending is down in the new budget to help pay for the massive increase in "defense" spending. Why would Putin want to spend money on a census when he could just use that money to buy more recruits for the meat grinder? One less vatnik to count next time, after all.

    Then again, this is almost not even news, considering they've only actually had three censuses since the Soviet breakup in 1991.
    Actually, the rot had set in well before the collapse of the USSR. For example, data from the 1970's indicated an increase in infant mortality; a sign that there were significant issues.

    Well, sure, I was talking about population decline, not population growth decline; the peak, not the inflection point.

    An increase in infant mortality can result in population decline. Obviously, any regression analysis would be multivariate.

    To be fair, so has the US. And the last one was halted before it was finished under Trump.

    It was behind a paywall for me, but the headline is;

    Russia has lost access to CERN in a sign that its war in Ukraine is causing a major scientific brain drain
    The bullet points are;
    CERN is revoking access for 500 Russian scientists over the Ukraine war, cutting them off from key facilities.

    Russian media has tried to cast the move as an own goal by the West.

    But experts say the move is a major setback for Russian science, and is fueling brain drain.
    Yet another nail in the coffin that is russia's future. I doubt at this rate the history books will even bother to ask "was it worth it?"
    Maybe working together in space is next?

    Russia had to shoot down an ultra rare and very expensive s70 stealth heavy drone they lost control of.

    It was heading west but the wreckage still fell behind Ukrainian lines so you bet the parts are already heading to the US.

    I'm willing to bet money that it'll do nothing but cause laughing fits to US engineers that know their way around stealth tech. Russia humiliating itself seems to be almost as solid a law of nature as Russia lying.

    I'd rather the thread move when there's actual news, not paranoid fearmongering about Putin nuking everything because his bluff was called or someone said something not nice about him.

    He wasn't hyperbolic and overly dramatic. He was certifiably deranged and had a Putin/bloody conflicts fetish he couldn't even hide. Each time he spewed his crazy stuff, entire thread was derailed for many pages

    Plus seeing his little edgelord avatars was grating.

    If he was some sort of nasty bad faith troll good riddance. If he was some deeply troubled individual with a drinking problem getting off of here and out of his self-inflicted abuse is probably what’s best for him.

    I prefer the thread moving at the rate it is now...where the actual updates aren't drowned out by YUPPIE and his Armageddon Boner.

    Been a little while since sign up bonuses were mentioned. Back then it was 2.2 million but it has gone way up since then. Belgorod has just announced new sign up bonuses of 3 million rubles (or over 31K USD at current exchange rates.)

    These bonuses are being paid for but he regional governments mostly, not the federal government, in an attempt to shift some of the ever expanding costs.

    Videos are surfacing purportedly showing Russian drones targeting civilians in Kherson.

    Its been going on for a while and the russians are proudly posing videos of it.

    Some did some calculations on the sign up bonuses, and the equivalent would be if the US DoD was offering 160K sign up bonuses, 13k pay a month and mortgage and student loan forgiveness, all for the low price of a one year contract. Oh, and death or dismemberment.

    Please, you had me at the sign up bonuses and the monthly pay. You don't need to sell it to me.

    That has been ongoing at least since November last year when the first reports of such incidents started coming in.

    Expected time of survival...36 minutes out of your 7 day boot camp.

    I'm trying to look into how the different administrative regions are funded, hard to find any useful info in English, so I asked a Russian friend to look into it as even she couldn't explain off the top of her head.

    Ultimately I don't think it matters much who pays out the bonuses, the federal government or the local administrations, they both have their hands in the same proverbial cookie jar.
