A meeting of EU leaders took place in Kyiv pushing for a full 30 day ceasefire, with the US backing the efforts. If russia doesn't accept even more sanctions and weapon support are promised.

The Kremlin labelled it confrontational, say sanctions against them are meaningless and will not even enter talks on ceasefire until all weapon delivers to Ukraine are halted.

Basically russia again saying they have no interest in peace.

Isn't Russia supposed to run out of money for the war at the end of the year? I'm sure they'll keep it going even if they do.

It's complicated. They won't be running out of money, and even if they did they could continue the war because they can pay for the war in social capital as long as they have an iron grip on their system. But based on how things are going this year is the year Russia will be starting to run out of things. They're already running low on certain vehicles which has already significantly hampered Russia's ability to advance at speed.

They're running out of heavy artillery barrels, currently all the stocks have been completely emptied, not just of barrel but reserve artillery pieces. They've been cannibalizing their stock to provide fresh barrels for the frontlines because they only last so long, and they've been using them a lot and still do. They do still have plenty of lighter artillery pieces, but they do have a significantly shorter range and more importantly they do not produce enough ammunition to service the ones already in the field. They won't be able to replace the heavy pieces with lighter ones for that reason once they start running low on them. projections for this range from last quarter of this year to summer of next year.

besides that there are other significant pieces of equipment that they won't have any left of from the first quarter of 2026 onward if they continue to use/lose them at current rates.

A delay tactic maybe? I just don't see him giving anything up, no matter how many lives it costs the russians and Ukraine and the free world will just never allow the forcable seizure of four terrorities. Its against the very rule of law we have lived in for nearly one hundred years.

As expected, the no ceasefire yesterday, but russia only launched 10 drones and only killed 2, so I guess thats an improvement.
All eyes are on Istanbul for Thursday, where Zelensky and putin (?) have agreed to meet and talk. (yeah right.)

There was speculation this week that Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky might meet Russia’s President Vladimir Putin in Turkey on Thursday – if the Russian leader decided to show up for talks that he himself suggested.

The possibility of the two men meeting face to face caused major excitement, but it might not be happening after the Kremlin’s list of delegates made no mention Putin.

This has little to do with anything Trump actually did because he wanted Europe to step up their game, and everything to do with what Trump decided the US was going to stop doing because he's a petty would-be dictator who doesn't give a shit about Ukraine.

The single tenet of democracy that makes it the best of all currently known systems for governance is precisely that it takes forever to do anything because everything gets mired in discussions and debates and it takes forever to achieve anything.

Because it takes so much longer to push "bad" legislation, and the flaws in that legislation typically come out in the process, and can be corrected before it's a problem. The same process will seek comparable flaws in "good" legislation, and eventually admit it cannot find any, but that's the price you pay.

The alternative is any other more-autocratic system where there's less debate and discussion and less need for a wide range of eyes on the legislation, and that means bad shit gets passed through into law much more easily.

That's how healthy democracies stay healthy; by slowing everything way the fuck down to a glacial pace. It's only failing democracies that are able to bypass the checks and balances and push legislation out rapidly and without due consideration and review.

You're essentially blaming European democracies for not being as diseased and rotten as American democracy has become.

On top of the lie that Europe has in any way been "inactive".
