It's a cold weekend here in Europe (tho not as bad as Canada was) so russia predictably and dickishly pummeled Ukraine's energy grid leaving half a million without power.
Turns out, Ukraine struck back and knocked out power and heat to 600,000 over in Belgorod.
My whole political stance pretty much boils down to "I care about other people and the planet" and wow does that make some people mad.
I guess after 4 years of war the Ukrainians have already mastered the use of generators. The situation for them was terrible from year 1 and most of them had generators, it will be hard to break them now.

It was still a ballistic missile designed to carry multiple nuclear warheads that get MIRVed at the target. They just loaded its with dummy warheads instead of nukes thus time.
Because it is meant to carry nukes, they had to let others know they were going to use it to prevent misunderstandings, which is why warnings happened before the launch.
But it still costs something like 30 times what a Iskander does, so it was a waste of resources, especially given they are only meant to have a handful of them.
Well, going off of what Corvus said, it’s possible they’re… running out of alternatives? They’ve been dusting off antiques to put on the front lines and sending in troops with little to no gear or provisions, if they’ve got “break in case of emergency” shit in reserve it’s possible they’ve hit that point. Every day that passes is yet another day longer than they ever planned this to go on, and they’re several years of accruing those days in.

Sadly I don't think thats the case. I think it was more posturing/nuclear sabre rattling and field testing. Their daily reminder they have nukes.
Just an expensive way of doing it.

The russian invasion of Ukraine is at day 1418. Which is how long its involvement in ww2 lasted.

Its taking a toll.
War fatigue grows as life gets harder in Russia
Admittedly this is very much a both sides issue.Daily life in Russia is changing in quiet but persistent ways. Away from the front lines, economic pressure, tighter controls and a muted public mood are reshaping how people live, work and speak.
Many describe a sense of stagnation rather than sudden collapse.
Rising pressure
According to Newsweek, four years of full-scale war are increasingly affecting ordinary Russians through higher prices, taxes and a growing sense of restriction.
From 2026, the government plans to raise VAT from 20 to 22 percent, while around 40 percent of the federal budget is set to be directed toward war-related spending. Interviewees told Newsweek they have felt the impact since 2022, pointing to rising food and clothing prices and a steady erosion of middle-class living standards.

As of today the Russo-Ukrainian War's "Special Military Operation" phase has now been as long as "The Great Patriotic War".
1418 days from the launch of the German invasion of the USSR.
1418 days since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
If you count from 2014, when this really started, we are well past 12 years. Thanks to Russia, Ukraine has now been at war for practically half of its existence as an independent state.
Madness and butchery.

Ukraine seems to be going after the russian power grid of late as well, and the russian government seems in no hurry to fix it, instead using it for propaganda purposes. Some parts of Belgorod have been without power for days, and the governor's response is to tell those affected to leave home for the rest of winter.
Meanwhile, a russian miliblogger may find himself being volunteered and sent on the next meatwave. He says russia has mobilised 2 million men for the war, and that 400,000 are dead and and total losses, including wounded, are 820,000. A 1:1 death to wounded ratio is unheard of. Even in ww1 it didn't get that bad.

It is very simple, we live in an age where those who have the power are trying to expand and make their dreams reality. Putin has opened the gates of hell with his invasion. China is the only one who isn't following through and yet it is used as an excuse, it is really a shame.
