Its posturing 101. It is also inconsistent with how Putin has handled his entire Invasion. If he was as unhinged as a guy 'ready to push the button at any moment' then why isn't he just steamrolling Ukraine. The media loves to ham up any mention of nukes. I remember when anchors were suggesting that Erdogan was going to seize US nukes back when he was being an ass (still is) in Turkey.

As for Russia putting nukes in Belarus. You should more worried about Belarus in that relationship than Russia. Putting ones nukes in another country is something just Cold War starts. Putin is trying to rebuild the old USSR buffer around Moscow, if not Ukraine then Belarus.

You can start to worry when he completely stops speaking to his advisors and begins hitting civilians indiscriminately.

I don't see any way out of this for Russia, even if they win their war and take Ukraine, they still get absolutely hammered with economic sanctions until their economy crumbles. The only victory they can pull off at this point is to pull out and save their country, otherwise their only trading partners will be China. They will become an isolated outcast. What happens when the Rouble is worth less than the paper it's printed on?

In part, they don't want a way out. They want de-globalification and less foreign reliance in the future. Just as they want more land and increased borders to buffer their national security.

Its a calculated risk for them. One that I think they egregiously fucked up. Because while the caviar, blinis and vodka might keep flowing undisturbed in the Kremlin, the average Russian citizen is about to suffer hard. And all for some very intangible idealistic nationalism.
