It's baffling to see people argue that geography can make democracy impossible, when I'm part of a long-term (like 8+ years now) Dungeons & Dragons group who live in three completely different countries with an ocean separating some of us (Canada, the US, and the UK, and the Americans aren't all that close to each other either).
If we can figure that shit out enough on our own to play D&D nearly every weekend for years, I'm pretty damned sure a country can figure out how to make elections work across lesser divides.
Sometimes, the light of the moon is a key to other spaces. I've found a place where, for a night or two, the streets curve in unfamiliar ways. If I walk here, I might find insight, or I might be touched by madness.
Never underestimate the power of mob, ahemm, sorry, large masses of people and the leader/elite fucking up the wrong way. I am not saying it is likely - I am saying it is not impossible (unlikely, though).
Plus - the new selfie generation really, really could not care less about empire building, there are more fun things to do/have and there will be more of them.
Actually there are limits for sure, he just did not get to that point yet.
It is true that he can soak quite a bit, but if it starts getting into 5 digits (legitimate though, not just some twitters) - he will be in big trouble.
Afghanistan was a big reason why USSR imploded and USSR had much more balls than Russia has.
Apparently reliving their 90’s, was something Putin thought would be a great idea.

Oh look, Republicans that were totally OK with Trump withholding foreign aide to Ukraine are RIGHTEOUSLY OUTRAGED that Biden isn't doing enough now.
Fuck these performative asshat clowns.
In which McCarthy ignores everything the Biden administration did in terms of building a western coalition to sanction Russia swiftly if they did attack, attempting to head off the invasion by talking about it openly and sharing their intelligence with China, knowing full well it would be shared with Russia so that Russia knew how much we know etc.“The challenge that we have is, it’s the actions that we could have done before from this administration to make sure today wasn’t happening,” McCarthy said Tuesday on Fox & Friends. “We could have supplied the weapons to Ukraine. They’re not asking for American troops, they’re just asking for the ability to fight.”
In that we need to manage it on an ongoing weekly basis by ourselves as a hobby, whereas a government would have thousands if not tens of thousands of bureaucrats and admin staff working professionally to pull off an election once every few years.
You're right, it is kind of incomparable. It should be easier for a nation to figure out how to digitally manage elections.
