Because they saw the opportunity of them effectively posing with the Ukrainian president as being potential for personal political gains.
"look at how I'm combatting Russian tyranny! By posing with the embattled Ukrainian president! Remember, vote republican to maintain a tough stance on Russia"
That's 100% what they were going for.
That they effectively ignored pleas to not share the photos doesn't really surprise me. I'd be more surprised if they were actually paying attention in any meaningful way and had even heard that part, and even if they did they were probably thinking "eh who cares what this foreigner thinks, this'll look great for my publicity!"

Not sure if posted, but it seems the Belorussian military didn't invade Ukraine in numbers when they were supposed to because the military from Top to bottom is outright refusing to get involved. Some have even ran away (possibly defected)

What strikes me as odd but yet not odd is that Putlers actions just drive Finlands and Sweden a bit more to joining NATO.
Make no mistake the opinions are far from that happening but a erratic lunatic in control of vast armed forces next door is a pretty good talking point.
And NATO threatening Russia (odd since its a defensive pact) is one of his, in his book, strongest talking points.
Russia is doomed as it always has been historically
