The article shows evidence that a range of nearly 5000 (at least) were issued on the same day. It also shows that a number only about 750 before the first one they have evidence for was issued all the way back in 2015.

Here's the funny thing, though.

It's a corner they walked into. And moreover, a corner they could just walk out of. Literally no one is keeping them there.

Russia could pull every troop out of Ukraine tomorrow, say they're super duper sorry, and I'm sure have to negotiate how sanctions would be getting removed, and then they'd largely be at where they were back in January, save for a couple thousand dead soldiers, a shambling economy, a gigantic loss in military equipment, and an international reputation in the dirt.

But them continuing to fight doesn't make any of those latter points "less bad." More Russians will continue to die, their economy will continue to crumble, more of their equipment will be destroyed or seized, and their international reputation will only continue to spiral downwards.

It seems Putin has fallen into the cost-sunk fallacy. Let's see how long the rest of Russia keeps following that line.

The thing is that if Putin pulls out now it would likely be a mortal blow to his grip on power.

It wouldn't sit well with the Russian people that Putin trashed their economy, turned Russia into an international pariah and got thousands of Russian troops killed or maimed for nothing because Tzar Putin got high on his own supply.

So yeah, he is in a sunk cost fallacy now and it is just going to keep getting worse for Russia.

Numbers on medals can be easy photoshoped. Heck whole story can be made up.

They have to walk back out over their own minefields, and through the same areas their supply convoys were being blown up. Going backwards without a peace agreement is incredibly difficult, because as long as hostilities are hot, nobody is going to let you just take your tanks with you.

I think the point was that there is nothing stopping Russia from stopping hostilities. Ukraine isn't interested in conquering Russia....they just want the Russians to go home and stay there.
