TOKYO - Japan will once again describe Russia's decades-long hold over a string of disputed northern islands as an "illegal occupation" in an annual foreign policy report, a draft showed Thursday, as bilateral ties sour following Moscow's invasion of Ukraine.

The classification will appear for the first time since 2003, reflecting Tokyo's shift away from a conciliatory policy stance towards Moscow, taken in the hope that progress in negotiations over the islands off Hokkaido could lead to their return in the future, to a more hostile position.
Apparently this isn't "new new", just a return to pre-2003 on this topic.

Elon Musk's Net worth is, allegedly, North of 200 Billion. Obviously, most of that isn't liquid... but still. He could probably find 500 million searching through his couch cushions.

Given the state of the Russian military, I'm pretty sure Japan could take and hold the island if push came to shove.

    Oof.

CNN: Zelensky removes two top Ukrainian generals, says he does not have "time to deal with all the traitors"
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he removed two top Ukrainian generals, calling them "antiheroes" in his nightly address posted to social media on Thursday night.

"Today another decision was made regarding antiheroes. Now I do not have time to deal with all the traitors. But gradually they will all be punished," he said."

The generals — former chief of the Main Department of Internal Security of the Security Service of Ukraine, Naumov Andriy Olehovych, and the former head of the Office of the Security Service of Ukraine in the Kherson region, Kryvoruchko Serhiy Oleksandrovych — have been stripped of their rank.

“Those servicemen among senior officers who have not decided where their homeland is, who violate the military oath of allegiance to the Ukrainian people as regards (to) the protection of our state, its freedom and independence, will inevitably be deprived of senior military ranks. Random generals don't belong here!” Zelensky said.

    Interesting.

Would like to know what, exactly, does that mean. Sounds like the generals have been advocating on surrendering, or some such?

Let's hope Ukraine can hold on.

Zelensky addressed the Australian parliament the other day and among his request was for Bushmaster Protected Mobility Vehicles (basically a 4x4 on steroids designed for the Australian environment). The Australian government has said that they will be sending some, along with more guns, ammo, body armour and humanitarian aid.

These things are really good at keeping troops alive against IEDs and mines - despite numerous incidents against them in Afghanistan and Iraq not a single soldier was killed while in one. Against tanks and ATGMs not so much so, but they are fast and long ranged troop movers (100km/h road cruise speed and 800km range).

Most likely the generals who stole the most out of all of them.

Not only a Russian problem by a long shot.

Separatist troops. They conscripted everyone and gave them whatever they could find at hand. Also being used as cannon fodder because the Russians don't actually care about them and they don't get counted as Russian casualties.

Just...wild. Didn't they stop making these in the mid-1900's? I guess there are still a metric fuckton just laying about or something.

If I sound like a broken record, it's because that's the only card Russia has and been threatening to get everything they want since 2022 started. Right now, people are laughing their asses off at the incompetence of their military forces and overlooking this fact.

Huh, I just assumed that those two generals had views that were not compatible with Zelensky's philosophy and national goals, so he had to fire them and replace them with yes-men. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing because military people should defer to civilian leaders.

Yes, but they still have a stockpile of millions of them. A decade ago you could buy a crate of 20 of them in the US for a couple hundred bucks. The supply here dried up because Obama banned their import by Executive Order as one of the sanctions against Russia in 2014.

Sadly ironic that they're now being used by separatists fighting for Russia inside Ukraine.

I just don't fucking understand Russians. Or, I truly fail to grasp just how phenomenally successful Russian domestic propaganda is.
I mean why even trust Russian polling to begin with? You think they're going to bother actually doing phone surveys when they can just pull the approval rating out of their ass and have the same outcome?

Nobody's "overlooking" anything, Russia hasn't been "threatening" to nuke anyone, and it's not "the only card that Russia has".

And while people are laughing at the relative ineptitude of the Russian military, only an idiot would think that they're harmless. Just ask any of the thousands of Ukraine's civilians who have been killed.

    Oh, wait, you can't.

I mean, we're literally seeing daily war crimes, and you're blathering on with "Hay gais, nooks r all rushya has! wen r teh nooks?"
