Perhaps "close to a century" would have been more accurate, at least as it pertains to the United States; after the USSR began it immediately raised the hackles of the US. That might have dissipated a little on a national scale in World War 2 when, boy howdy turns out Germany can't be trusted and the US and USSR became temporary buds against the axis powers, but that swiftly decayed back into abject mistrust, and western media has used the Russian government or Russian gangs or Russian oligarchs as the go-to bad guy for decades upon decades as the go-to bad guy. That's basically prepped the rest of the world to fundamentally mistrust Russia's word, and as I noted they've done absolutely nothing to assuage that assumption, and have really only fed into it.

I've always tried to separate the government from the people, but crimes like this make that REALLY hard.

Don't get me wrong, the people committing these atrocities are absolutely responsible for them. But that doesn't mean every person in Russia is a terrible genocidal monster. I suppose one could argue their complicity in knowing these things are happening, but there are people bravely protesting, and who have been bravely protesting, in Russia against the war.

The people protesting in Russia face far steeper risks than those protesting, say, some idiot like Trump in the United States, and don't have the benefit of "the other side" powerful political party to back them up and condemn the current leadership from a place of authority and action.

India has contracted 45,000 tonnes of Russian sunflower oil at a record-high price for shipments in April as edible oil prices in the local market surged after supplies from rival Ukraine stopped, five industry officials told Reuters.

Sunflower oil from Russia could help the world’s biggest edible oil importer in easing the shortfall at a time when availability of vegetable oils is stretched because of Indonesia’s decision to restrict palm oil supplies and lower soybean crop in South America.

“As vessel loading is not possible in Ukraine, buyers are trying to secure supplies from Russia,” said Pradeep Chowdhry, MD of Gemini Edibles & Fats, which contracted 12,000 tonnes of Russian sunflower oil for April shipments.

Refiners bought crude sunflower oil at a record $2,150 a tonne, including cost, insurance and freight, for April shipments, compared with $1,630 before Russia invaded Ukraine, dealers said. Buyers are paying in dollars, a dealer said.

India imports sunoil mainly from Russia and Ukraine. It imports palm oil from Indonesia and Malaysia, whereas the bulk of soyoil is sourced from Argentina and Brazil.

India has now been trying to increase imports of sunflower oil from Argentina, said Sandeep Bajoria, chief executive of Sunvin Group, a vegetable oil brokerage and consultancy firm.

"Even after the imports from Russia and Argentina, there would be shortfall of sunoil. Nobody can replace Ukraine's shipments," Bajoria said.

India consumes around 200,000 tonnes of sunflower oil but currently refiners can import around 80,000 tonnes only, the New Delhi-based dealer said.

Consumers are forced to switch to soyoil, rapeseed oil and groundnut oil as sunflower oil supplies are limited, the dealer said.

"Sunflower oil is very expensive. This is forcing price sensitive buyers to shift to other oils," Bajoria said.

Again that's not because India likes Russia or dislikes Ukraine or the West, it's just because sanctions are largely a luxury for rich countries. A lot of places can't afford to be ideological in regards to economics and trade.
