A general mobilization or just wider drafting of reservists would be hard for them to start doing without declaring Russia to be in a general state of war, but make no mistake, they're still going to do everything they can to frame that as a positive for Russia if the situation gets to a point where they have to.

Russia conscripts people in batches for military training on a regular basis already.

They have people in their reserves in serviceable age groups with training...

From what I've read, there should really be quotes around "training." Apparently 90% of the conscripts' time in the military (pre-Ukraine, anyway) was spent either cleaning the base or doing parade drills. They're trained how to look good, not how to fight well.

I'm actually morbidly curious how they'll do that. "The war is going so well we need to double our troops" will be interesting to justify. I just wish it could be done in a situation that didn't involve thousands upon thousands of dead civilians and Russian draftees who didn't have a choice.

I get that there's something to be said about having an army with hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of people. In most situations that'd be a giant "fuck off" sign. I mean, a million untrained people could realistically beat 100,000 trained ones with the same gear just by sheer zerg power, depending on the situation. But the context here is clear: Russian troops clearly aren't prepared. No food, no winter clothing, and those that didn't desert, flee, or run over their own commander with a motherfucking tank are apparently raping civilians to death. The threat of sheer numbers falters when you demonstrate how ineffective those numbers are. A trained cop or soldier should be worried of ten copies of me with a pistol, but should not be as threatened of ten copies of me with a pistol if they know I've never fired a gun in my life and only have one mag.

And of course, we all know about the parade uniforms.

I'm not implying it's a bad thing or condemning them, but with how Ukraine's people have designated Russians as "orcs" and the actions they've taken, hatred for Russia has exploded internationally. They never even had good approval ratings, ever, but this is a whole new low.
