This is very misleading. General in Russian army is not the same as General in a European or US army. A General in Russia typically commands around 3000 men, sometimes a little more or a little less (as few as 500). Closest alternative would be the Colonel rank (3000-5000 typically), or Lieutenant-Colonel. If I remember correctly, there are around 700 Generals in the Russian army right now. Basically, lower ranked Generals, just like Colonels or Lieutenant-Colonels in the US or Europe, are expected to take part in combat missions. US for example lost 4 Colonels in a single bombing attack in Kabul, Afghanistan in 2010, if I remember correctly.

100 years of difference yes, but also sorta kinda. From what I know a lot of rural Russia doesn't exactly have the best access to non-state-sanctioned news sources, so it could very well explain a considerable amount of the ignorance.

Reminds me of a family story, "paved with gold" type. When my Italian great grandfather came to the US, he spoke/understood very little English. When he went back to Italy, he was amazed. "They have so much salt, everywhere you look salt salt salt. That's all they had. Salt!"

Usually the people doing the mass murder, ethnic cleansing and elimination of unwanted states and national identity ARE the Nazis. Though I also roll my eyes a bit at calling anyone, Russians included, "Nazi" unless they actually espouse National Socialism.

My sister used to teach English as a Second Language and she would often tell me about how idioms don't necessarily translate well between languages.

Might be similar to "We were promised the moon"
