This is a real war not a video game. He already set a battle with the US or NATO as one of his endgoals (to stop Western dominance in his own words). It's important to distinguish this not being fantasy because asking why he hasn't straight up invaded the US from the start is ridiculous, as he would be shredded into mincemeat. He is invading Ukraine and then moving on to other parts of Europe to establish resources and a staging ground.
