You're still paying in roubles through GazPromBank - who creates them by dumping Euros from Western company on Moscow Exchange (MICEX) for roubles, strengthening the rouble.

In the process that payment also becomes immune to Western seizures - because roubles are in Russian control, GazProm only ever gets roubles as payment, and Forex trades are anonymous so West has no idea where those Euros went in Russia. This is why Europe is saying that doing so will break their sanctions.

This also makes GazPromBank immune to all sanctions if West wants to keep getting Russian gas - and West still needs to for years - and thus allows to use it as conduit in other deals.

We're one month in and West is shown to be utterly unprepared for economic war of attrition - no reserves, no agreements, frantically looking for solutions to plug the gaps and finding there are none that will work in time.

Entire CBR sanctions only made sense if they would stop Russia on it's tracks. This didn't happen.

If you'd geared up for long haul you should have gotten your gas storage filled as well as made preparations for clean break before going "financial nuclear".

Now you're left in position where Russia gets to dictate the rules and you have no real leverage remaining nor any alternatives for years.

For simple reason - you didn't contract extra volumes despite ability to do so. And you sold whatever you've gotten from Russian long-term contracts for profits on spot market (remember all those reverse flows to Poland from Germany?) rather then keep it in storage.

You made your hand weak by your own decisions and now you're blaming Russia for exploiting that - while at the same time gleefully cheering "We've seized your reserves!"
