The game has never been metal, you're making shit up.

Eh, that's basically any post-Conan "Swords and Sorcery"-type fantasy though, which is vastly older than heavy metal.

Oh come now, a bland power metal song, which sounds like a lazy Iced Earth rip-off with worse vocals is the reason as to WoW was good? Pffft. And honestly, it seems like you're the one who has some odd 1986'ish idea of what metal culture is.

Been that way since Cataclysm, but okay.
Amazing sig, done by mighty Lokann
So you’d have preferred the game be put on maintenance mode back when the people who influenced those early years left the company? Or just have all the new folks half-ass a game with a themes and tone that they don’t identify with?
There’s nothing wrong with having games cater towards a genre like that, it’s just going to be difficult to maintain that over time. If you want the game to continue development you’re invariably going to get new people working on it that come with new ideas.

Fact (because I say so): TBC > Cata > Legion > ShaLa > MoP > DF > BfA > WoD = WotLK

Maldraxxus is full of references to metal bands.
Ardenweald has a ton of references to the Fae from European pagan folklore.
Bastion is full of greek mythology, which is European and pagan.
Revendreth is vampire country, which is more modern mythology but has its roots in western Europe in Vlad the Impaler.
The afterlives seem pretty European pagan to me.

This game has never been metal, although there's been many honorific references to it. But even that's still in the game. They outright said that Maldraxxus is designed to be an homage to metal.
Man, you don't know shit about fantasy if you think WoW was ever particularly "metal". Warhammer shits all over it in that department (yes, even the lighter and softer Age of Sigmar) and that's not even getting into 40K. Witcher is more metal. God of War is more metal. Hell Dragon Age is more metal and it's been barely ever trying to be since the first game's marketing.
Go play Doom Eternal or something if you want an unapologetically metal game. Warcraft has been pretty tame since its inception, with sporadic tragedies like the sack of Stormwind, the Scourge, or Teldrassil spicing things up from time to time. Nothing compared to the madness you can unleash in Total War Warhammer or something.

The game can't rebecome something it never was.

Well, we can do you blood and love without the rhetoric, and we can do you blood and rhetoric without the love, and we can do you all three concurrent or consecutive. But we can't give you love and rhetoric without the blood. Blood is compulsory. They're all blood, you see." ― Tom Stoppard, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead
