It likely was though it was weird that the name was leaked, then like, wasnt it hours later, an image was too? The image made it feel staged.

What the fuck. Dragonflight clearly means it's about dragons. You can't be serious.

Also the leaked image shows Alexstrasza.
Viral marketing has been a thing for a while. Chances are because this is a Tuesday at 9am/12p announcement, that coincides with Bnet reset time and likely will have the pre-order up for purchase right at that point. Building hype through speculation by dropping the name is a good idea. It could backfire spectacularly though, if the community gets the wrong impressions of what the expansion will entail.

How could you get the wrong impression about Dragonflight?

People assuming additions such as classes, races, and features, speculation on story and zones, etc...
Let's say Dragonflight has major void/light undertones that people just don't seem interested in and aren't speculating about... or he'll there just isn't a new class and race, people will be disappointed.
The community will over hype the announcement and when the expansion reveal doesn't match expectations, well than that will be a problem.

I think a lot of people do expect some void vs. light stuff. And the fact that you bring it up is evidence of that.

Not at all, its advertising hyping t up in advance, had decades of this, mix a tiny truth with a veritable mountain of lies then when legit rumours come out the doubt is real, but it all serves to keep interest and so on, imagine the opposite, no rumours at all even the troll mountain ones and then just expansion announcement every 2-3 years, not as effective.

They (compamies in general) do really stupid things for advertising.

If the leak is true, do you think it’s an accident that there happens to be a “Micro-class” for each “Armor Class”?

I think there will be a little. But if it looks like it will be a major subject of the expansion, that will likely not go over well.

If you look at the OP each class actually does get something:

    DK - Dragon Knight spec
    DH - Warden skin
    Druid - Nightmare skin
Hunter - Tinker spec (elves also get Dark Ranger skin)
    Mage - Chronomancer spec
    Monk - Bard spec
    Paladin - Dragon Knight spec
    Priest - Chronomancer spec
    Rogue - Bard spec
Shaman - Dragonsworn / earthwarden skin
    Warlock - Necromancer skin
    Warrior - Dragon Knight spec

Exactly this, and on the classes where it doesn't make sense for that armor class, they just happen to get a skin. IE Tinker for mail doesn't make sense for Shaman, so dragonsworn skin.

If it was that big of an element, they wouldn't call it Dragonflight.

Dragonflight can be about anything and trying to attach a specific subject to it is silly. All we know is that it involves dragons but nothing else. It could be a major cosmic threat focused expansion or it could be styled after Vanilla with mini-stories that are not really related. Warlords of Draenor ended up being about the Legion even though they are not referenced in the name.

I have a hunch it'll be about dragons.

Well that's almost no info at all. Maybe it'll be about pandas then.

That is like saying Mists of Pandaria will be about Pandarens. Duh, but it was an Old God expansion which wasn't hinted at in the title.

It wasn't an Old God expansion. It was a panda expansion with faction war. And the Old God element was very minor.

WotLK and Cataclysm had more Old God stuff than MoP.

They don't want things spoiled, but they do want to build hype. Giving something like this out as an "accident" allows them to give some piece of the puzzle to the community without giving away the whole thing & see how the community reacts.

It's a good early test of the concept without having to actually give any real information that also builds excitement for whatever Dragonflight might entail. They are still holding back the big pieces behind encryption.

So you are ignoring how the strong emotions of the Horde and Alliance conflict started the Sha appearing again? Or the servants of a dead old god that are trying to bring him back? It was an old god expansion and the Alliance vs Horde faction war was the sub-plot.

No. I said the Old God element was minor. And you are strawmanning me. Bye.

It wasn't minor. It was major reason why us being there was bad. The alliance and horde haven't mastered their emotions and freed the Sha to reck havoc in every zone. Eventually even the leader of the Horde succumbs to the Old Gods corruption. This isn't a strawman at all.

To be fair the sha didn’t play much of a role outside of the leveling zones and a few instances until the final patch. It was an amazing thing though

The Sha were more present than absent, even if you discount that nearly everything the Mantid and Yuangol were doing was because of them.
confirmed by my uncle nitnendo and masahiro samurai
