What are the best ways to make the Alliance more popular and interesting?

Make factions purely ideological and remove race-faction restrictions.

Many of them took part in it, and none of them opposed it. And the Forsaken haven't done anything to atone and make amends for what they did to gilneans, humans of Lordaeron or the Night Elves.

Realistically there's no way gilneans would accept to help their nemesis go back to Lordaeron, especially when they haven't their own homeland back (thanks to the laziness of the writers and devs).

It makes it really hard to write them powerfully without it seeming condescending or oppressive, and it makes it nigh-on impossible to see them as the underdog you actually want to root for.

I agree, the Big Guys are boring to write about - and when at the same time they are the good guys (or at least that's how they are portrayed), !@$% becomes even worse. The Old Alliance was much more interesting, because writers allowed some folks like OG Genn or Anasterian to be assholes and thus there was a continuous, internal struggle that gave the faction some much needed nuance.

But when you write them as that perfect, unassailable group of saints who can do no wrong other than being inexplicably benevolent towards one of their biggest enemies, things start to go south pretty quickly.

Also I wouldn't make humans, even those of Dalaran, the main mages and warlocks for every situation. Dwarven, elven, gnomish and draenei magi should have their own moments to shine and show their power and usefulness.

Also there should be some specificities and unique qualities and flaws for each race in terms of magic mastery, knowledge and specializations.

I believe that the battle for Stromgarde should have happened during Cataclysm or MOP, and with Stromgarde forces helped by dwarven clans and the gnomes facing off and beating the Forsaken, Blood Elves and possibly Forrest Trolls allies of the Horde to secure a foothold in Lordaeron, restore one human kingdom and give a political victory to the unification of the dwarven clans.

No, it started with the racials that went unfixed for several expansions, more and more people moved to Horde, most people that moved were good active players, that wanted to max out there potential. After this another wave of people left, a huge wave, because they couldn't find active players, good players, this wave also killed whatever was left of Alliance.

This is the fault of Blizzard, it's there game, if they refused to acknowledge the huge problem that was build up ... then good riddance, they can now call it World of Horde, pretty sad. And they are confused why so many left and are not coming back.
