alliance would be more popular if they had more story for themselves instead of just "the new warchief has betrayed even the horde and wants to kill everybody/destroy the world and we have to help the horde rebels" and then getting to orgrimmar and remember that the city is impenetrable unless a band of demigods wielding planet killing weapons get inside.

they just need more interesting story arcs

I would have made some changes in the story with more grayness and political stuff:

For example in Stormwind : Varian Wrynn would have been forced to confront and deal with the consequences of his depression and of Onyxia's machinations with him having to spend much time and efforts to repair Stormwind's power and bring back order in the neglected regions such as Westfall, Duskwood and Redridge Mountains.
    - The House of Nobles would be more present and a real power and institution with which Varian and Anduin have to find compromises and with differences of opinions affecting the kingdom's capacity of intervening worldwide.
    - The Church of the Holy Light would have a true political role and be an ally of the king in some areas while being strongly opposed to the inclusion of Death Knights and Warlocks, causing much friction. It would also have a role and influence on the relations with the other human kingdoms, as well as with Ironforge and Quel'Thalas.

    - - - Updated - - -

The warlocks should have had a hard and long time at convincing Stormwind and the rest of the Alliance to accept them, and there would be many tensions with the mages, the Kirin Tor and the Church of the Holy Light.

There would be some spying and conflicts between the SI:7 and the Order of the Silver Hand, with the intelligence organisation sending spies in the ordre and causing anger when the paladins find out.

    - - - Updated - - -

Develop the cultural and political differences and tensions between the human kingdoms, with the other kingdoms having lighter or closer ties with other members of the Alliance such as Stromgarde being closer to the Wildhammer Dwarves, Dalaran with Draenei, Gilneas obviously with Night Elves which is already present but should be showed further, etc...
The other kingdoms should have different objectives and interests and disagreements with Stormwind.

    Night Elves :
I persist to say that Maiev Shadowsong and Fandral Staghelm shouldn't have been turned into villains and stayed political and ideological opponents to Tyrande and Malfurion without going crazy and evil.
    - Their bond with Draenei and Worgen should have been layered and explored further.
    - Also their interactions with their natural allies such as Furbolgs, Mountain Giants or Chimaeras.
    - Mordent Evenshade and the Highborne should have gotten a bigger role, with their struggle to rejoin and reconcile with their king being developped, Fandral would have been the main opponent to their reintegration to NE society, while Maiev would have been open about her disdain and distrust of them without murdering them.
    - The Druids of the Flame would have been created by Staghelm and his daughter-in-law after Ragnaros' first attack against Mount Hyjal, with the goal of empowering their people and fighting fire with fire against Ragnaros and the Horde.
    - We'd see real guerilla from the NE against the Horde, without them being the story's punching bag.
    - We'd see some concrete differences and issues with the humans, dwarves and gnomes while eventually accepting their allies' different culture and views, and also a bond being created with the Widhammer Dwarves over their love and reverence for nature.

@Terrorthatflapsinthenight your mistake is assuming that someone can oppose Our Treasure without being immediately being villain batted... unless he/she repents at a second's notice and converts to Anduinism, I guess.

But don't worry - Our Treasure's grace is so great that you can be effectively redeemed, even if you committed terrible actions. You only have to do something for him, get puppy eyes for a while, and presto.

They had likely decided about Blood Elves getting blue eyes already when golden eyes were added first, and the feedback about them from the Sin'dorei playerbase was overall positive about it.

Also they didn't add Void Elves to the Alliance because the fans of the Alliance asked, Ion and the devs had no problem to ignore the requests of High Elf fans for years, despite on the official forum it was getting more insistent lately...it's just that previously they had already taken the decision of introducing the Nightborne as a playable allied race into the Horde, so in order to sweeten the deal for Alliance fans, "High Elves with a Void twist" had to be added in the last minute to the Alliance (and it shows from their starting quests that were written very quickly and without much efforts or sense), otherwise if the Nightborne had gone Alliance instead, either Void Elves wouldn't exist and the Horde would get another race, or the Void Elves (not rescued nor led by Alleria but just by Magister Umbric) would be allowed to stay in the Horde, just living in another Horde capital (likely Undercity for their affinity with the Cult of Shadows of the Forsaken) if the issue about their presence corrupting the Sunwell would still be a problem for them to keep living in Quel'thalas....
the easy way was simply just let anyone grind rep and fight for the faction they want

Alliance High Elf? play Blood Elf and grind towards the Alliance
Alteraci Human? play Stormwindian and grind towards the Horde
Lightbound Orc? play Mag'har and grind towards the Alliance
Forsaken non-human? play any Alliance Death Knight and grind towards the Horde

    and so on...
The Alliance gets the Horde's most popular race. The Horde should get the Alliance's most popular race in return. Alteraci Humans for the Horde!

Cross-Breeding of playable races, Who doesn't want to see what the result of a Tauren mating with a Gnome, or a Human with a goblin? I mean it would be interesting to see some of the wild stories this could produce.

That would be interesting, actually! A half-elf race would be nice, perhaps a lost colony or something, made up of descendants of exiled high elves and humans from the Eastern Kingdoms perhaps!

    - Stormwind becomes hostile -> no more a capital
    - Paladins no more available (existing characters still playable)
    - Humans flee to Arathi/Stromgarde
    - can now be Druids (because of their Gilnean and Tirassian allies)
    - Stormwind Humans left with no leader
Yes, nothing would make the Alliance and humans more popular than doing to them what they've already done to the night elves, while turning their Second War hero into a fantasy crusader by writing WoW's Horus heresy.

Sarcasm aside, Blizzard needs to start addressing the World of Warcraft, rather than panning the story to a cadre of 5 characters.

Thanks for your input, though. I guess
The Alliance is being drained of almost everyone who wants to do PvE content, which is the instanced content prefered by most players. If anything, paths need to be created to make the Alliance more popular to incentivize balancing things out.

What do you think why they're creating cross-faction gameplay? It's the complete devastation of an entire faction's playerbase that's lead to it.

The Alliance is catering to mostly casuals, roleplayers and players who play out of "faction pride"; these players would then also be discouraged by their faction's latest story development.

It's safe to say that, if for whatever reason, Alleria felt "heartbroken", then the world of Azeroth would come to an end.

Never forget that Alleria has the power of a Void Naaru inside of her; the same creature that would have wiped out the Draenei civilizations on Draenor all by itself.

In fact, that's the main argument I use whenever someone (very tiny minority btw) claims that Alleria will become a villain. If she became a villain, WoW would end because everyone would die. Just like everyone would have died in AU Draenor, if it wasn't for Velen's sacrifice.

They need to get rid of Anduin and Jaina-like philosophies. All this peace and love talking is babyfying the Alliance. At least in MoP, we had Varian to counter Anduin. Now, he's going rampant with his carebear attitude.

We need more Varians, Daelins, Blackmoores, MoP Jainas and Turalyons. Old school guys instead of this "progressive" characters.

And a very tiny minority believes this.

The void elves were perhaps somewhat interesting at first, but even they were never really expounded upon. For example, how did they increase their numbers so significantly, and how many are left are all the deaths in the Fourth War? What do most of the Lightforged draenei think of them? Alleria and Vereesa haven't even made a real apperance in the new expansion yet. Blizzard starts intriguing themes, but never seems to continue or wrap them up the correct or satisfying way.

Have you read any of the books? Alliance is so vannilla flavored it’s nauseating. Three of the racial leaders are priests ffs. The Alliance story needs some edge to it, not edgelord. Let the Alliance be a little aggressive and whoop some ass in game for once and not hear in an interview that they won some battle when no one was looking

Because Blizzard, for some inexplicable reason, hates them.

how did they increase their numbers so significantly,
There's no proof their numbers were low in the first place. And anyway many Quel'dorei and Sin'dorei travellers bolstered their initial ranks.

and how many are left are all the deaths in the Fourth War?
There's no reason to believe the Ren'dorei suffered any particular losses in the Fourth War.
What do most of the Lightforged draenei think of them?
While Void elves and Lightforged NPCs were seen chatting in Stormwind, from the novel Shadows Rising, it is stated that the Lightforged commander shuddered with disgust upon entering the Void portal alongside Ren'dorei Captain Nightgiver.

My conclusion based on Canonical evidence is this: While Ren'dorei and Lightforged have amicable relationships, the problem arises when they have to use their conflicting powers in unison.

Which, in hindsight, is the reason why it might not have been a smart move for Anduin Wrynn to place BOTH THE REN'DOREI AND THE LIGHTFORGED on the SAME SEARCH SQUAD.

Alleria and Vereesa haven't even made a real apperance in the new expansion yet.
    SPOILERS FOR ENDING OF SHADOWLANDS

They are datamined to appear in the final trial of Sylvanas Windrunner.

I will say this is more a strength than a weakness at least for the time being given the current state of the Horde and the story.
