Disney self-government in peril after Florida House vote

    Link: https://www.yahoo.com/news/florida-l...170620912.html
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — The Florida House of Representatives on Thursday gave final passage to a bill that would dissolve Walt Disney World's private government, handing Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis a victory in his feud with the entertainment giant over its opposition to a measure that critics have dubbed the “ Don’t Say Gay ” law.

The move could have huge tax implications for Disney, whose series of theme parks have transformed Orlando into one of the world’s most popular tourist destinations, and serves to further sour the relationship between the Republican-led government and a major political player in the state. Disney did not return an email seeking comment Thursday.

For DeSantis, the attack on Disney is his latest salvo in a culture war waged over policies involving race, gender and the coronavirus, battles that have made him one of the most popular GOP politicians in the country and a likely 2024 presidential candidate.

The bill passed by the legislature on Thursday would eliminate the Reedy Creek Improvement District, as the 55-year-old Disney government is known, as well as a handful of other similar districts by June 2023. The measure does allow for the districts to be reestablished, leaving an avenue to renegotiate its future. The bill now moves to DeSantis’ office to be signed into law.

The voting ended a bitter, three-day special legislative session in which lawmakers were tasked with passing a new congressional map drawn by DeSantis but also took up the Disney bill at the governor's request. Tensions erupted Thursday as Democrats staged a sit-in protest on the House floor against the map, prompting Republicans to walk out briefly.

Opponents of the new map chanted phrases about the suppression of Black voters as GOP lawmakers returned and passed both bills

"It was clear that our requests and proposed solutions were not going to be heard so he rushed it through," Democratic Rep. Fentrice Driskell said of the Disney measure.

The dispute with the company began with Disney's criticism of a new law barring instruction on sexual orientation and gender identity in kindergarten through third grade as well as instruction that is not “age appropriate or developmentally appropriate.”

In March, Disney said it would suspend political donations in the state and added that it would in turn support organizations working to oppose the new law. DeSantis and his fellow Republicans then lashed out at Disney, and have defended the law as reasonable.

“Disney and other woke corporations won’t get away with peddling their unchecked pressure campaigns any longer,” DeSantis wrote in a fundraising pitch Wednesday. “If we want to keep the Democrat machine and their corporate lapdogs accountable, we have to stand together now.”

Democrats have criticized the Disney proposal as clear retaliation against the company and warned that local homeowners could get hit with big tax bills if they have to absorb bond debt from Disney — although such details are far from clear.

Disney is one of Florida's biggest private employers, last year saying it had more than 60,000 workers in the state. It is not immediately clear how the company or local governments around its properties would be affected if the district was dissolved.

The creation of the Reedy Creek Improvement District, and the control it gave Disney over 27,000 acres (11,000 hectares) in Florida, was a crucial element in the company’s plans to build near Orlando in the 1960s. Company officials said they needed autonomy to plan a futuristic city along with the theme park. The city never materialized, however; instead, it morphed into the Epcot theme park.

The Republicans seem to be banking on which people like more... Mickey Mouse and Disneyworld, or... Ron DeSantis and inevitable tax hikes.

And for some reason, they decided the latter was more appealing.

Between this, the bill itself, DeSantis' general terribleness on COVID, and the exploding costs of.... well, everything in Florida, democrats could really be posed to make mincemeat of DeSantis in the election... if they can properly strategize, mobilize, and message.

Which they cant. They will sit on their asses and twiddle their thumbs bemoaning how terrible the Republicans are. The modern Democratic Party is wildly incompetent and suffers from too much in-fighting to be remotely effective.

I find it hilarious that Disney gave these people money, and then when Disney tried to eat their cake by saying they don't support the legislation, they went "nah, groomer". and now, in case we somehow had a shortage of L's to hand out, are being such vindictive pricks, that they are going to raise people's taxes by the thousands by making them have to pay for the services that Disney otherwise (should) have to pay. it's freaking hilarious.

According to a bill analysis by legislative committee staff, dissolving the district could require approval by a majority of the resident electors or landowners of the district.
So Disney has to give final approval to ending it's nice district? At least lawyers will argue that's the case.

Reedy Creek’s two residential communities, Bay Lake and Lake Buena Vista, have about 50 permanent residents in total, most of them Disney employees. As primary landowner in the district, Disney controls most of the votes to elect Reedy Creek’s board of supervisors, giving the company strong influence over any vote within the community.
    Yup

David Ramba, executive director of the Florida Association of Special Districts, said that the bill will almost certainly draw lawsuits, and that Disney could argue that the legislature doesn’t have the power to dissolve the district with a general law because it was originally created by a special act of the legislature.

“There could be challenges to the constitutionality of the law that was passed if the parties don’t work out some agreement on how to implement the law before July of next year,” Mr. Ramba said.
Lawyer field day. Nothing happens for years.

To get back at Disney, DeSantis wants to shit on Orlando? I mean it's mostly blue but it's a massive voting block in a purple state. I feel like he is planning for the decision to get overturned because it's right up there with the dumbest things he could do.

The nastiest part what they did to the other two districts. I'm not even sure how Republicans can stand...oh wait they are full of shit. Dude is straight up shitting on Republican-favored legislation.

We know this dick head is going to be vying for a federal spot in 2024 because his tenure as governor is not doing him any favors for reelection.

Yeah..... If they ever properly strategize, mobilize, or message, it is entirely by accident or because they know they will start getting primaried by people who will if they don't.

Their actions start making more sense when you stop thinking of them as the alternative to the Republican party and start thinking of them as the illusion of an alternative who's main job is to keep real alternatives from getting in.

Remember, the only real time they have shown initiative has been when it came to keeping more people like AOC from joining their ranks after she made it on.

Disney could pull like what the Air Force has moved to. Actually start moving their employees and business OUT of Florida and take all that tourism and income with them. Watch Florida really start shitting themselves.

Even with Disney there, Florida already took in over 63 billion a year in federal funding MORE than they paid in making them one of the, if not THE, biggest welfare queens in the union. To watch them leave too, would be great. The question then becomes, where do they move to?

DeSantis literally no hill to stand on with this one. Every Floridian can make a complaint about Disney but the reality is that Disney brings in a lot of money that does make its way back into the economy. They arent obstructive or as slimy (Disney is still slimy) as the some of the big government contractors down here. What has SpaceX done for FL lately? Disney took a bunch of land no one wanted and developed the hell out of it an employee people of all income brackets while bringing a ton of foot traffic to shops and businesses from coast to coast in the state. Democrats nor Republicans are trying to mess up that money.

Yeah, the smart thing for the state would have been for DeSantis to just shut up and move on. But since Trump got them to take the mask off and show just how much of a racist bunch they really are and they think they can get away with it, the GOP is trying to flex on Disney thinking Disney has no options here.

It's almost like these racist, xenophobic and cowardly fucks see their generation and views dying and would rather burn it all down to preserve it than watch the world succeed in a way they dislike.

And as much as I hate having to side with Disney given their abuses over the years, especially in regard to copyright laws, cause be the carrier, they shouldn't be punished for actually doing the right thing like the GOP are attempting.

I would like to see Disney actually call this and respond by moving their workers and their entire operation out of the state into another state entirely and take all that revenue with them.

Florida loses all that money from Disney directly, loses all their tourism and are generally left with elderly trying to make their socialism checks stretch in a state that relies on other states paying their bills for them to keep the state running (All while ironically complaining about moochers) and the beach goers which will be much fewer as well without Disney there.

Disney closing shop there and reopening in a place with fewer hurricanes and more comfortable weather and more accessible to most other states than Florida is could see them as a net win.

Plot twist, Disney opens up in a rural area in northern Texas and flips it blue making it even harder for Texan's to gerrymander the state.

Way to give the whole bullshit game away dumbass Lieutenant Governor of Florida. Now Disney will win any lawsuit that they bring against DeShitstain and the Florida Government. They are openly admitting that they are fucking blackmailing them, to support the Don't Say Gay bill/law.

"Sexualizing children at a young age"

Does...does she not know of like 1/4 of the programming on The Learning Channel? Because like, from what little I remember from back when I had cable that was a disturbing amount of their daily programming after they lost federal funding. Well, really any amount is disturbing, but I feel like they had a whole bunch of shows about mothers pressuring their toddlers and little children into performing for what could only be described as a pedophiles dream.

I'm not trying to knock child beauty pageants and shit, kids can rock out and have fun. But I have vivid memories of a small girl in a bathing suit being spray tanned at a body shop (like, for cars) using one of their spray guns while she was screaming bloody murder, spliced in with her mother talking about how much she "loved it" as if it was being played for laughs. That shit creeped me the fuck out.

Hmmm, could it be? A piece of republican legislation whose entire intent is merely to send a message, without any practical application and actually just ends up costing taxpayers more money? You don't say!

It's completely pointless to argue this point with these fuckwits. They don't know that's there's a difference between "sexualization" and "sexual education," and they don't want to know. It's easier for them to just label it all evil to drive gullible morons to the polls to keep their useless asses in office.

    1. Florida runs Disney out of the state
    2. Florida assumes the financial liabilities left behind from abolishing their municipality.
    3. Florida loses the revenue brought by Disney.
    4. Florida throws a fit, demanding the shortfall be made up in even more federal funds cultivated from blue states that don't fuck around.

Step 1 isn't going to happen. From what others were describing, the state of Florida doesn't really possess the ability to just dissolve a county without the resident's approval... who are all Disney employees... meaning it wont happen.

So it sounds like this is yet another example of toothless GOP legislation never designed to pass, would immediately backfire if it did, but is nonetheless designed to appeal to their base to sound good to them to make up for their actual lack of governance ability.

Personally I’m all for it and to boot I think Desantis and Abbot are awesome. I think they are making a nation for all the Alt-Right and Trump supporters.

Hopefully they become a magnet and draw their people there.

If Disney doesn’t like it they can move. They are multi billion dollar company, I’m sure they’ll be alright.
