how fuckin bad are their books looking right now? or is this just musk being bored and finding another petty vendetta to pursue

10/10 stuff, this is exactly the kind of behavior that continues to assure big dollar advertisers that Twitter is a stable, brand-safe platform to spend their money on and that it is operated by predictable, sensible leadership who don't take needless risks.

Looks like casual art/meme/shitpost will migrate over to threads, while Twitter will become a hotbed of political culture wars. i.e. the only person interested are conservatives and Elon sycophants who think liberalism is destroying the world. They'll feed their own doom and gloom feelings about the direction of the country, and many will probably go on to be violent insurrectionists and school shooters once they've doom and gloomed enough.

Overall the country (USA) and world are relatively "fine". I realize that's a short word for the state of the world, but there's not some apocalypse coming because of the "liberal agenda" like so many conservatives want to tell themselves.

People don't seem to realize that Twitter isn't actually that ubiquitous. It has about 300m MAUs while Instagram, which Threads is essentially a module of, has over 2b MAUs. Tiktok has about 1b. Reddit has 1.6b. YouTube has about 2.4b. Facebook has about 3b.

Twitter has not captured nearly as large of an audience as you might think, given how much attention it's given.

So Threads becomes the new Twitter and Twitter becomes the new Parler.

Twitter was king of the hill for a while in its niche. Any number it did was The Largest.

Most of the people I know IRL are 'internet normies', so to speak. They don't use the internet for point scoring or discussing nerd shit. They have Facebook and Instagram and all they do is post pics of their holidays and family gatherings and make the occasional remark on a news story. The younger ones do Tiktok. None of them use Twitter AFAIK because the general impression is it's a place where political extremes go to argue with each other.

"Elon Musk’s Tesla has joined Chinese automakers in pledging to enhance 'core socialist values' and compete fairly in the country’s car market after Beijing directed the industry to rein in a months-long price war."
    https://twitter.com/daveweigel/statu...vaeSFeXUQ&s=19

A socialist you say? I'm for this, good for you Elon.

Now the story is Musk and other car manufacturers were squeezing out smaller companies with unfair business practices (cough capitalism).

Now the right wingers are going willd with Elon's embrace of socialist and China. Not the champion they think he is when it comes to making money.

Now as far as the socialism aspect it is pure bs. Even China here is taking a Big bite out of capitalism.

Maybe he found some shady lawyers that are telling him he can nullify the deal by claiming some sort of fraud occurred but he has to raise a stink with the firm first.

Seems to be a thing lately with rich assholes that surround themselves with bootlicks.

So, as I've understood it based on imported rules from Instagram NSFW artists of all stripes are annoyed at Threads. As the largest reason they are big on twitter is that the bird didn't care about that more than sensitivity filters and age gates etc

Man, I can't wait to see the sort of people filling out their job application after this one.

"It says here your previous job was representing Elon Musk? That's quite a haul. Which case did you take?"
"There was that time he signed a contract in public and bragged about it for months, then tried to back out of it."
"Oh...well, at least you kept him from facing any additional consequences from his actions."
"Um, no...he sued those lawyers, the ones that stopped him from breaking the contract before he got in worse trouble. I, erm, sued those lawyers because Musk thinks...lawyers...shouldn't be paid."
"...well, we'll call you. Would you mind turning on the shredder on the way out?"

Also, Wachtell Lipton took a job from a Trump-wannabe, from their client's point of view lost the case, and actually got paid. I hope other lawyers, especially those in Florida, are taking notes. Musk proves by the week he's a whiny little bitch, but he still pays his lawyers.

    ...kinda.

So, twitter probably has a lot of non-account traffic. More compared to most other SM.

For ages I didn't have a twitter account, yet I had 3-5 twitter accounts as bookmarks and checked them at least once a week for various updates.

Technically, he's suing because he's arguing that paying Wachtell Lipton (the law firm that successfully forced Musk to honor the offer he'd made to Twitter) both its fees and a hefty last-minute bonus (if Wachtell Lipton managed to make Musk pay up) was irresponsible action by Twitter's former management team (whom Musk immediately fired after the deal closed), and that the bonus itself was illegitimate.

In reality, he's suing because he planned to stiff Wachtell Lipton as payback for making him buy Twitter at the price he'd offered to (he did successfully stiff some of the smaller players), but Wachtell Lipton and the former Twitter C-levels outmaneuvered him, and now he's all butt-hurt over it (and could probably really use the $90 million).

I recall reading that the number of active users on Twitter, as of May 2023, has gone down to around 230M from a peak of just under 400M. No wonder their ad revenue kept going down.

Twitter old board hired a law firm to force Musk to honor his bid to buy twitter. The fee was 16M (time and materials) + 84.3M agreed upon success bonus. The old board figured what the heck, "not my money." The fee was paid before the takeover was completed. Now Musk wants the money back.

    Yep. Totally bizarre.

Elon Musk urges Twitter users to stick around for the laughs and occasional ‘negative stuff’ as Mark Zuckerberg’s Threads races to record signups

“You will get more laughs from this app than everything else combined,” Musk tweeted as Threads reached 100 million users in record time over the weekend. “But I have to warn you … don’t be shocked … there’s some negative stuff too,” the billionaire added with a hint of satire.
When asked what "negative stuff" was, Musk responded with a poop emoji.

    "Hah hah, funny running joke."

    Um...no.

Twitter responded to Fortune’s request for comment with its customary poop emoji.
Yeah. Again, this wasn't some nobody asshole like me trolling Musk. This is a major newspaper that's taken seriously. And, yep, same response. Musk is insisting on being treated as a spoiled, immature child. Who would defend someone like that? Oh hey, @Winter Blossom, I didn't see you there.

The Facebook founder declared—in a series of posts on Threads, of course—that his app will be a kinder space than its rival Twitter, which has become more accepting of extreme views since the Tesla boss acquired it.

“The goal is to keep it friendly as it expands. I think it’s possible and will ultimately be the key to its success,” he wrote. “That’s one reason why Twitter never succeeded as much as I think it should have, and we want to do it differently.”

“It is infinitely preferable to be attacked by strangers on Twitter, than indulge in the false happiness of hide-the-pain Instagram,” Musk hit back at the time.
    Oh, also this:

    On Twitter, everyone's voice matters.
-- Twitter CEO Linda Yaccarino, overseeing the $8/month "verified" blue check program which directly refutes "everyone's voice matters" with "but some matter more than others" in the increasing Animal Farm that is Twitter's slow march to the glue factory.

This is a Fortune article, by the way. It was hard to sift through all the articles for a source that usually handles things with dignity and respect, and even this article calls out Twitter (including Yaccarino) for becoming a festering pool of hate speech, while Threads hit 100M faster than...anyone?

You know how badly Musk's lost the culture war he started? I already quoted Fortune. Now I'll quote Business Insider.

Twitter runs a "dick pic bot" that scans the platform for not-safe-for-work posts, according to a tweet by the social media company's owner, Elon Musk.

The billionaire mentioned the apparent tool in a Sunday evening tweet when the account @libsoftiktok asked if the platform was quietly limiting their posts.

"Your account was labeled as NSFW by our dick pic bot on 6/26, because you posted media with nudity from Pride parades," Musk replied. "Corrective action is to label the individual posts as NSFW, rather than the whole account. Should be fixed now."

Musk later added that the bot sometimes mistakes images of rockets as phalluses. "Which is crazy of course," he wrote.
"Okay, that doesn't sound all that bad, really."

    *ahem*

    Until.

The bot's full capabilities and scope are not immediately clear. Nor is it clear if the detector truly exists, given Musk's penchant for cracking jokes on Twitter.
Business Insider did not take Musk at his word. Again, serious, respected source. Flat-out says in public "We don't know if Elon Musk is telling the truth".

If anything, this is worse than Musk being mocked.

Oh, and I stumbled into that story because I was legit looking for anything saying Musk has clamped down on bots in Twitter. I found this instead. I don't think Musk has kept his promise on that, either. And even if he claimed he has, considering he blocks monitoring apps and jokes all the time, I would not believe him.

    Why would I?
