Elon Musk is not just the Trump-supporting owner of the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter. It turns out he is also one of the platform’s biggest peddlers of election-related disinformation, according to a new report published Thursday by the Center for Countering Digital Hate.

The report from CCDH, a nonprofit organization focused on protecting civil liberties and holding social media companies accountable, found that 50 false or misleading posts shared by Musk on X between Jan. 1 and July 31 of this year racked up a staggering 1.2 billion views. The group categorized the posts under three main themes: false claims that Democrats are “importing voters” through illegal immigration (the bulk of the content that researchers examined); false claims that voting is vulnerable to fraud; and a manipulated video, also known as a deepfake, of Vice President Kamala Harris. Musk endorsed Donald Trump for president last month, after Trump nearly was assassinated.

According to the report, while independent fact-checkers found the content in all of those 50 posts shared by Musk to be false or misleading, none of the posts in question contained a “community note,” X’s user-generated fact-checking system that the company promise’s can contextualize “potentially misleading posts.” Just this week, Musk claimed in a post on X that community notes offer “a clear and immediate way to refute anything false in the replies,” adding, “the same is not true for legacy media who lie relentlessly, but there is no way to counter their propaganda.”

Elon, master of dis and misinformation on his social media platform, and sensitive snowflake who made his posts un-notable so that the community cannot correct his dishonesty.

rofl, 7.5K posts? millions will boycott?

Fans online are now citing the viral phrase "Go woke, go broke" — stemming from the previous Bud Light boycott in 2023.
Have...they seen the finances for Truth Social, Rumble, Gab, The Blaze and the like? None of them are doing well.

The whole thing is silly. There is a reason why tech and social media CEOs, despite the majority of their employees support Democrats, don't take sides when it comes to politics. Because once they take sides, they will piss off half of their customer base/advertisers. Since Musk openly supported Trump, Tesla's sales in California, which used to be Tesla's largest market, has dropped 24% in the second quarter of 2024 compared to second quarter of 2023, while they were down 17% in the first half of the year overall. That’s a huge drop in sales.

Hardly just that, his overall transition from, "Cool billionaire guy that likes memes and does really exciting stuff with space and electric cars and got a cameo in Iron Man 2" to "Right wing nutjob with a savior complex", combined with people eventually realizing that he's primarily just a dishonest hype man (HYPERLOOP SOON! TESLA ROBOTS ANY DAY NOW! SELF DRIVING TAXIS NEXT WEEK!).

But really, him just turning into a gross, awful, decidedly uncool fringe right wing nutter absolutely hurt their sales with the wealthier, more liberal west cost types. It doesn't help that the latest product is an overpriced steel coffin.

If I recall, Tesla is relocating to Texas.

You know, Tesla. The electric car company. Plug in go vroom people. Is moving to Texas. The place where they are unable to keep the electricity on. To the point where people fucking died.

Hey now, that only happens when there's a hurricane. Or a big storm. Or some rain. Ok, sometimes the power goes out on a nice sunny day.

More of Musk silly games. Two years after he moved Tesla HQ to Austin, he opened Tesa Engineering HQ in Palo Alto. In the former HP HQ campus.

If you go to LinkedIn and search for Tesla job openings, currently there are 300 openings in the Bay Area and 99 in Austin.

He just moved X HQ out of San Francisco. More silly games. X only had 120 employees left in Mid-Market.

They absolutely do take sides, the issue is that you don’t see them lobbying against labor and privacy laws as an ideological stance.

They aren’t apolitical, you just share their politics. Honk honk.

I'd argue the drop in Tesla sales has less to do with Musk and more to do with viable better alternatives. That are delivered on time.

I should have said "publicly." They usually let their army of lobbyist do the work for them. This open bickering on public forum, such as X, is fairly new.

Again, it really isn't. The only thing which has changed is that you're being affected by such rhetoric, where before you could ignore it. I still remember the discourse surrounding even providing business to queer people back in the 90s, however.

The idea that the American private sector is largely apolitical is horseshit. It's primarily conservative and has duped people like you into accepting their ideological stances as a norm, which is why we get such scintillating takes as "I'm so glad that my wealthy area isn't as badly impacted by climate change, thank god I helped price people out of it", or treating unhoused people more like a form of dirt or contagion in the way you talk about homelessness.

Thankfully not recently, but brownouts on hot days are not entirely uncommon. Not that I'd call temps approaching 110 "nice sunny days."

Probably not a new phenomenon, but I find it interesting since Musk taken over, one could find dead body almost still on fire from recently fresh plane crashes and what not. Along with porn and anything else, can't imagine why advertisers along with the racism and rampant hatred why most company's not desperate enough to over look it aren't advertising with Twitter.

Must not be terribly confident he can sue companies to force them to advertise

Maybe he is hoping this will turn things around for X.

BREAKING: X Payments is coming soon!

Although he will need to compete with Apple Pay, Google Pay, Meta Pay and PayPal.

PayPal has over 300 millions active users in 200 countries. Apple Pay is king in the US.

Hahaha yeah I am not going to pay a dime towards Elon or Twitter and it doesn't look like I am alone. I am guessing unless their financials turn around going into 2025 and building their platform with WWE/UFC and exclusive enough content like Tucker Carlson or Jim Rome, then yeah I don't know.

Nothing that existential. It was a simple real estate transaction. Owners wanted to sell home. We were looking for a place with nice weather and air quality. We liked the neighborhood. For the first time in 30 years, my sister and I would be living in the same city about 10 to 15 minutes from each other. No homeless. No crime. We bought the home.
