Some good reporting on NPR on how Twitter, once useful for getting fast updates on natural disasters and other fast-moving events, is functionally completely useless in that regard as X given the reality that the platform is making zero effort to combat misinformation and has instead actively promoted some of the biggest spreaders of misinformation.

Trying to get actual updates and spread information is hard when feeds and searches are flooded with conspiracy theorists claiming the hurricane was Democrat controlled or deceptively editing videos to lie and make it seem like Biden denied requests for aid. No requests were denied, the federal resources were ready and he was saying that they hadn't been asked for them yet and couldn't deploy them until local and state agencies made the request.

Because unlike the Trump administration, the Biden administration actually plans ahead and prepares for disasters. Yes, FEMA staff do that regardless of administration, but they're more effective when they have actual support from the Executive branch.

But since Elon Musk’s purchase of Twitter in 2022 and its subsequent transformation into X, all that has shifted. A blue check mark used to mean that the company had verified a user's identity. Now it just means the user has paid for a subscription, which makes identifying which accounts are trustworthy more difficult. The company also raised the cost of access to analyze its data, making rumor-monitoring efforts prohibitively expensive for many researchers.

"The kind of difference here that we're experiencing is just the amount of kind of maybe un-useful tweets that you have to dig through to be able to find the useful, actionable ones," said Samantha Montano, an assistant professor of emergency management at Massachusetts Maritime Academy. "And that's a real challenge because in a disaster, you don't necessarily have time to be digging through all of that."

Researchers have not yet looked at whether the effects of X’s changes under Musk are negative for disaster response. Silver is applying for funding to answer the question.

"I do still think that there are real benefits to using social media in disasters — whether it's Twitter, Tik Tok or something else — as a way for people to organize among themselves and work directly with survivors," Montano said.

Dull says she has been relying on TikTok and a neighborhood Facebook group as well as family and friends in the area. She wants to know both what’s happening now and what’s happening next.

"I would like to hear updates on the people that are trapped on top of mountains right now. I would like to know what steps they're going to take to move forward and start rebuilding," said Dull. "I want to know how they're going to help us feel a sense of normalcy again."

Twitter was where you went to find out about things as they happened. Now it seems to be where you go to lie about what happened.

Just received this note from a SpaceX engineer helping on the ground in North Carolina. FEMA is not merely failing to adequately help people in trouble, but is actively blocking citizens who try to help!

The note read: “Hey Elon, update here on site of Asheville, NC. We have powered up two large operating bases for choppers to deliver goods into hands. We’ve deployed 300+ starlinks and outpour is it has saved many lives. The big issue is FEMA is actively blocking shipments and seizing goods and services locally and locking them away to state they are their own.

“It’s very real and scary how much they have taken control to stop people helping. We are blocked now on the shipments of new starlinks coming in until we get an escort from the fire dept. but that may not be enough.”
