Well when the figuring is “I’ve earned so much money exploiting the educational and infrastructural benefits of California, I now wish to spirit it away to a cheaper state so I don’t have to pay back into those systems” I frankly find it rather amusing that the inevitable conclusion is the rather obvious “darn, why is there nowhere near as robust an educational or infrastructural system for me to exploit in this cheaper state?!”


Maybe musk could have had that pull back when the public perception was that he was just a quirky guy popularizing rockets and electric cars. But now the “come live in this cheaper state so I can pay you less” probably has way less appeal to the west coast college grads who can still leverage their skills and earn way more money by staying put.

Company HQ is in Austin. Only Tesla Engineering HQ where they do the research is in Palo Alto. In fact, the building that it occupies used to be the old HP building.

The same with SpaceX. Although technically it is headquartered in Texas, majority of its employees is in LA. Likely for the proximity to the Jet Propulsion Lab (JPL).
