I mean, given his other bullshit like his claim that Twitter drives "most" traffic on the internet or whatever (it's actually Facebook with 75% or something, while Twitter's down at about 7%) that got "fact-checked" by the community (second/third time his bullshit has been corrected? How much longer will this feature exist?) it's a safe bet he didn't actually fire the guy.

What with Twitter already having to beg employees they just fired to come back because they realized that they might have fired a few too many people and lost a lot of the institutional knowledge that's key to any companies operation.

I liked when he claimed twitter was serving every employee a 400 dollar meal each day and when being called out by the person responsible he claimed they forgott to add the HR costs, which would still mean they had a 3 start michelin star chef for each employee apparently... It's also heavily hypocritical. Musk was one of the more outspoken people about liberals "canceling" and "silencing" people by firing them for criticizing the left or banning them for breaking TOS.

Now he's firing people because he can't take criticism, and banning people for breaking the TOS... which is basically just "ban anyone who makes fun of Elon Musk" and no other TOS are being enforced because of course they aren't.

You hired me for a 40-hour week, Steve. That means I work for 40 hours. If you want to work out something outside my stated contract to get me to work 60-70 (at a significant wage markup, no less), I'm punching in at 9 and out at 5, and I'm not working the weekend, period. It's one thing if it's a once-in-several-months emergency, but if you're expecting this shit as a regular practice, fuckin' pay me for my time or I have literally no reason to do the work.

Oh, and I turn my work phone off or screen work calls after 5 and before 9. If you want me to be on-call, pay me. I'll take 1/2 my regular wage for the off-work hours, all of them, if you want me to pick up the phone when and if you do call.

I agree, and exercise this myself.

But there are folks who are desperate for a job, and owners know this. Which makes those who exercise work-to-rule expendable, since they can easily be replaced by someone desperate enough to do whatever they are told so they can afford their bare minimums.

I think the best step forward to getting more people on board would be to do away with employment-at-will doctrines. If people were protected by the law, it would be a lot easier to stand by work-to-rule as the power is not solely in the hands of the employer.

There are grown man behaving like this. My first job was in a software start-up, run by a guy who describes himself as "technology evangelist" - he spent a few months jetting around the world searching for investors, promising everything, then spent a month in the office, furiously micro-managing disrupting anything useful that has been built in his absence, and each friday we had a get together where he would berate everybody for not being pro-active enough.

Me, being young and naive and being a hyped fanboy, was always on his good side (he actually (the HR guy which i often smoked with told me) had a ranking chart with employees where i ranged always top3). Then one friday, after another 1 hour triade of how no one ever gets up and presents anything, i raised my hand and - i will never forget these words - said: "Well, maybe it is because people are afraid of backlash, and a bit of a hostile atmosphere?"

Guess who got fired a week later But, at least i learned a very important lesson in life.

I still check up from time to time on the company, i think they're not at re-start #5.
