Consider that Alabama's conservative/moral agenda makes it toxic for the many lgbtq, or potential folk that might want/need an abortion in the services...
If members of the armed forces don't want to go there because of the state's laws, then readiness becomes an issue.

Now consider Space Command is now in Colorado instead of the very district that Lands won...
This is very important to keep in mind. That district was expecting the military command. They had already begun preparing plans for the infrastructure required, and developers were speculating on land, it was pretty much a done deal.

They lost BIG when the plans changed. That entire area took a very serious economic hit that can be tied directly to GOP grandstanding. The people there are straight up angry about it, and this special election was as much about punishing the GOP as it was about supporting Lands. Abortion and IVF are important nationwide, but it would be very wrong to assume that this massive a swing is going to be the story going forward.

Biden was the one that made the decision to keep the Space Command HQ in Colorado Springs. Shouldn't the Huntsville voters blame him and voted for GOP as payback?

I would be skeptical that he personally made that decision rather than the Pentagon, but even if he did the reason for that decision was Alabama's recent spate of heavily conservative laws regarding abortions and lgbt rights, which were entirely the GOP.

Under normal circumstances maybe. But you gotta keep in mind that Tuberville was going around bragging about it to anyone who could hear him. He wanted everyone to know that this was his doing, and everyone knew it.

The Florida Supreme Court has upheld the state's ban on most abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy, which means a subsequently passed six-week ban can soon take effect.

It needs a 60 percent threshold to be passed. Along with this Marijuana legalization will also get a vote.

The court that was reshaped by former presidential candidate and Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis ruled that the 15-week ban signed by DeSantis in 2022 can take effect. The ban has been enforced while it was being challenged in court. A six-week ban passed in the 2023 legislative session was written so that it would not take effect until a month after the 2022 law was upheld.

Most abortions are obtained before the 15-week mark, so the current ban does not affect most people seeking abortion. But a six-week ban would likely have a major impact on women seeking abortions in Florida and throughout the South.
So help me out here. If I am correct DeSantis signed the 6 week abortion to override the 15 week. So if the new 24 week abortion doesn't pass in November by the 60 percent, then I believe it goes to the 6 week ban?

If so people facing a 6 week ban even over a 15 week should energize them more. Yet, as a pessimist of getting that 60 percent, Floridians will then have a 6 week abortion ban, which is ridiculous.

These shithole states need to burn down by their own making and then get rebuilt by people that actually care. It's so disgusting watching all this go on and infect the rest of the nation with their depravity.

I think the Florida abortion constitutional amendment, even with the 60% requirement, has a good chance of passing.

It'll be on the ballot -- but will Florida Republicans actually honor the will of the people or will they pull the same bullshit they did with restoring voting rights to released felons?

Former President Donald Trump on Tuesday announced that his campaign would address the issue of abortion next week, a move that comes just after a Florida court paved the way for a six-week ban on the procedure.

At a campaign rally here, Trump addressed a question from NBC News: “Do you support the six-week abortion ban the Florida Supreme Court just upheld?”

Amid audible boos from the crowd, Trump, a Florida resident, responded.

“We will be making a statement next week on abortion," he said as he shook hands with others on the stage.

President Joe Biden and his campaign were quick with a dig at Trump.

"You already made your statement, Donald," Biden tweeted, attaching a past post by Trump with certain words circled in red: "I was able to kill Roe v. Wade."
Donald is likely waiting to see where both sentiment from his base and the general public falls on this over the next week so he can have a "new position" or something.

But as noted, he already has a position he's bragged about. Reminder that Republicans struggle with honesty on this topic.

Former Vice President Mike Pence said the Alabama Supreme Court made the “morally right” decision finding frozen embryos are children while admonishing the state Legislature’s law shielding in vitro fertilization clinics as “ill-considered.”

“The controversy over the Alabama Supreme Court’s decision on in vitro fertilization obscured the ruling’s importance and spurred the Alabama Legislature to enact an ill-considered law that will harm families seeking treatment for infertility,” Pence said in an op-ed published Thursday in the Wall Street Journal and co-written by John Mize, CEO of Americans United for Life.

Pence, a former 2024 GOP presidential nominee who founded the policy organization Advancing American Freedom, said the key takeaway of the ruling was that the Alabama Supreme Court gave the IVF couples involved in the case recourse when a wandering patient destroyed the frozen embryos , not that the embryos are children.

“The Alabama case exposed a culture of IVF industry negligence,” Pence and Mize wrote. “A lack of safeguards, combined with reckless disregard for the facility’s clients, resulted in the destruction of human embryos. The Alabama Supreme Court held that parents and embryonic children alike are owed basic legal protection from such negligence.”
    Mike Pence, extremist.

    Not children.

Granted in the next sentence he calls them "Embryonic Children" probably realizing his cross looked a little tarnished when he, you know, was honest.

My favorite part of this so far -

Indiana’s RFRA was a controversial piece of legislation signed into law in April 2016 by then-Governor Mike Pence, a Republican.
    Delicious.

Both Judges Melissa S. May and L. Mark Bailey concurred with Weissmann’s opinion, and Bailey issued an additional brief but biting concurrence of his own in which he chastised the legislature for “prefer[ring] one creed over another” by outlawing abortion.

“Indeed, where theologians cannot agree, legislators are ill-equipped to define when life begins,” Bailey wrote.
Also very good and accurate. Though I'll note that legislators are equipped to determine when legal personhood begins, we do that with birth certifications and social security numbers and the like. Which is pretty much the extent to which legislators should seek to define life - they're lawmakers, not theologians. When the state recognizes life is their domain, that's all.

Legislators, an overwhelming majority of whom have not experienced childbirth, nevertheless dictate that virtually all pregnancies in this State must proceed to birth notwithstanding the onerous burden upon women and girls. They have done so not based upon science or viability but upon a blanket assertion that they are the protectors of “life” from the moment of conception.
    Preach, boyfriend.

Donald Trump’s video statement on abortion Monday — saying the legalities around the procedure should be up to the states — came after months of his publicly and privately discussing the possibility of a federal abortion ban.

Trump’s positions on abortion have been a roller coaster for decades. At one point in 2015, during his run for president, he took “five positions on abortion in three days,” according to the Washington Post and detailed by NBC News at the time.
    BTW Donald's big announcement happened.

It was a nothingburger where he took no real position and just said "let the states handle it" which continues to be the cowards answer.

Which is a clear play for moderate voters, and has pissed off extremists in the anti-abortion wing who have long since stopped pretending they actually think states should decide.

Anyways, NBC has a wonderful walk down memory lane for how Donald's opinion on the topic has changed and evolved because he's never had a firm opinion and just says whatever he thinks will be the most popular position at the moment -

    February 2011: 'I am pro-life'

August 2015: Divided on defunding Planned Parenthood

February 2016: Says he'll defund Planned Parenthood — while also praising the group

March 2016: 'Some form of punishment' for women who seek abortions

October 2016: Trump vows to overturn Roe v. Wade

June 2022: 'God made the decision' to overturn Roe v. Wade

January 2023: Trump blames abortion for the midterm losses

September 2023: Trump makes vague promises about an abortion compromise

February-March 2024: Trump flirts with a national abortion ban

April 2: Trump avoids answering on Florida's six-week abortion ban

One of the nation’s most prominent anti-abortion groups rebuked former President Donald Trump Monday, accusing him of ceding the debate to Democrats.

Trump said abortion rights should be left to the states, forgoing the chance to endorse a federal ban on the procedure, which many anti-abortion groups were hopeful he would do.

“We are deeply disappointed in President Trump’s position,” said Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America.

Still, the group reiterated its commitment to “defeat President Biden” and congressional Democrats.
Antiabortion groups are big mad at Trump over his latest position, but know that he's very much not committed to it and can be convinced otherwise so their support continues.

President Joe Biden's campaign released its latest abortion ad of the 2024 election hours after former President Donald Trump said he believes abortion laws should be left to the states, sidestepping the national ban that some of his supporters want.

The 60-second ad, which first aired on MSNBC Monday, focuses on Amanda Zurawski, a Texas woman who sued the state after she said she almost died from a miscarriage. In the video, Zurawski and her husband Josh discussed how they had started buying things for the baby while Amanda was pregnant, including a baby book.

"At 18 weeks, Amanda's water broke," the ad's text said. "She had a miscarriage."

As the couple continued to recount memories of the pregnancy, text on the screen read, "Because Donald Trump killed Roe v. Wade, Amanda was denied standard medical care to prevent infection, an abortion."

Doctors were forced to send Amanda home and three days later, Amanda wound up in the ICU with sepsis, according to the ad.

"She almost died twice," it said. "The infection caused so much damage, Amanda may never get pregnant again."

The ad concluded with: "Donald Trump did this" and Amanda crying in the background, with her husband consoling her.
I'm a bit miffed because this isn't just Trump, this is the Republican party writ-large. As we've chronicled in this thread with every harrowing tale of suffering and risk to girls and women while Republican lawmakers in the state take zero action.

It's amusing that Trumps new stance is likely to cost him conservative voters, since for decades they've been screeching about States Rights*TM to get abortion laws passed, and now that Roe is gone, their oh-so-obvious endgame of a Federal ban is revealed. So here's Trump trying to appeal to moderates when the Party is clearly mask off about their complete un-moderate stance.

Not that, of course, any position Trump takes is something he'll stick to the moment it's not convenient for him.
