Time for another horror story of a woman's pointless suffering in a Republican-controlled state because Republican lawmakers think this current state of affairs is totally fine and feel no motivation or pressure to improve these laws to prevent his kind of pointless risk and suffering -

A North Texas man has spoken out about his wife’s already-devastating miscarriage that turned into a medical nightmare — leaving her unconscious and bleeding — which he attributes to Texas’ strict abortion ban.

Radio host Ryan Hamilton and his wife, who asked not to be named by the media, were expecting their second child when, last month, she began experiencing severe pain and bleeding at 13 weeks. After a trip to Surepoint Emergency Center outside of Fort Worth, the couple learned it was a miscarriage and the fetus no longer had a heartbeat.

“Unfortunately for people like us, because of the current laws in the state of Texas, that was only the beginning of this nightmare,” Hamilton wrote on social media.

Their requests for a surgical procedure were denied. Hamilton and his wife were then sent home with misoprostol, a drug often prescribed after a miscarriage to help expel the fetal tissue and avoid a potentially life-threatening infection. Hamilton said doctors told the couple the medication may need to be taken multiple times to work.

After “a long, painful night of the equivalent of early labor,” the couple returned to Surepoint Emergency Center. A different doctor refused to prescribe more misoprostol, citing “the current stance.” Hamilton said he took this to mean Texas’ near-total abortion ban, whose exception clause requires a medical emergency threatening a mother’s life or major bodily function.

“(My wife) told the doctor, ‘Get this dead baby out of me,’” Hamilton told the Dallas Morning News. “And they asked her to leave.”

The couple went to a different hospital, where the visit took about four hours. Hamilton said doctors kept asking the same questions over and over and seemed hesitant to provide care.

“It’s becoming clear that they’re (sic) primary concern is not my wife’s health,” Hamilton wrote on social media. “Instead, they seem to be worried about the legalities involved.”

Doctors once again told Hamilton the situation wasn’t enough of an emergency for a surgical procedure and instead sent the couple home with more medication. The pair was told they would not be able to get another dose if this one did not work.

Shortly after returning home, Hamilton found his wife unconscious in the bathroom and covered in blood.

“Having to pick my wife’s cold, limp body off of that bathroom floor, not sure if I was about to lose her, is something I will never forget,” Hamilton said.

He rushed his wife to a third hospital, where doctors confirmed the fetal tissue had been expelled. Hamilton’s wife was given fluids and eventually stabilized.

“I want people to know that this really happens,” Hamilton told CBS News. “My fear is that stories like ours will continue to get told and not believed. Everything in her life right now that she’s having to do to get better is not just a reminder of the baby that we lost, it’s a reminder of what they put her through, and she has to do it every day.”

Treatment for miscarriages, which means the fetus is no longer in the uterus or no longer has cardiac activity, is still legal under Texas law. The couple is not pursuing legal action against any of the involved physicians, Hamilton said.

Hamilton did not respond to requests for comment from LoneStarLive.com, but first shared the story May 20 on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter. As of June 5, his post has over 15 million views. Interviews with CBS News and the Dallas Morning News were published June 4.

The incident occurred two weeks before the Texas Supreme Court ruled against a group of women who sued the state because they struggled to get medical care for pregnancy complications, including some life-threatening cases. The Texas Medical Board is currently developing clarifications of the law’s medical exceptions, but doctors and patients are asking for more to be done.
Just carry around a dead fetus and deal with the complications that risked her possible death if she hadn't been discovered by her husband.

Hospitals in TX seem so terrified of lawmakers and especially the state AG going after them that they're not even willing to pursue likely legal procedures.

Which does seem to actually be the goal of Republicans in Texas on this topic, with the express intent of making girls and women experiencing pregnancy complications that require abortion services suffer and be unable to receive the care they need.

Former President Donald Trump continues to try to depict Democrats as the “true radicals” on abortion policy. To make his case, though, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee has made wildly inaccurate claims.

In a Fox News interview on Wednesday, Trump said, “Hard to believe, they have some states passing legislation where you can execute the baby after birth. It’s crazy.”
As with every time Donald and unhinged, lying Republicans have made this claim, a post-birth abortion is called murder. There are already laws against it in every single state and federally.

Republicans are so fucking desperate and terrified on this topic and will make up any and every lie to attempt to make their extremist positions seem less extreme in comparison.

Silly Dems, how can you pass laws like that when your kids will die in the next elementary school shooting?

I was. Their ruling is based on legal standing. Which is well established. Since the plaintiff doctors do not perform abortion, nor prescribed Mifepristone, they can't show harm, and therefore have no standing to sue.

Justice Brett Kavanaugh, who was part of the majority to overturn Roe, wrote for the court on Thursday that “federal courts are the wrong forum for addressing the plaintiffs’ concerns about FDA’s actions.”

Kavanaugh did not spell it out, but FDA has robust recall procedure. Hundreds of products are recalled by FDA each year. All the plaintiffs had to do was show the supporting data.

It was more that I have 0 trust in this current SCOTUS than anything, regardless of the validity (or lack thereof) of the lawsuit.

Cynical take, the reich wing recognize the damage that Roe V. Wade did to republicans last election cycle and don't want to risk it since they want Trump to be president. If he wins they go back and reverse it since precedence means absolutely nothing to them.

Cynicaller Take: Securing the authority of the FDA now will allow them to justify weaponizing it later when/if they staff it entirely with goons and use them to go after and recall Abortion Meds / Birth Control / Hormone Treatment.

And while I think they may not go after Birth Control early on, they will absolutely go against Hormone Treatment on a federal level.

That's not as easy as it sounds because hormone therapy is something used by regular people including many members of our crypt keeper congress. That's not even going into hormone derivatives that can be used to get the same effects.

They'll just conjure up some excuse as to how Hormone treatment can't be used for Trans folks for Reasons(tm) then never elaborate because they're not obligated to. Or, more likely, they'll ban it wholesale because they're short sighted idiots and then make up excuses as to why the non-trans related use cases don't actually exist.

Texas lawmakers touted their heartbeat law as a crusade to save lives, but the reality of the state's near-total ban on abortion has been deadly.

Hundreds of babies died after the law went into effect, according to a new study published Monday.

The findings in JAMA Pediatrics show that infant deaths rose after Texas’ Senate Bill 8, which banned all abortion after about six weeks from conception. SB 8 became Texas law in September 2021 and U.S. Supreme Court overturned the constitutional right to abortion just over nine months later, on June 24, 2022. The high court ruling in the Dobbs case prompted more than a dozen states to issue total bans on abortion. Observers speculate that evidence will also show increases in infant deaths in those states, akin to what Texas has seen, the study said.

“It just points to some of the devastating consequences of abortion bans that maybe people weren't thinking about when they passed these laws,” Alison Gemmill, an assistant professor at Johns Hopkins University’s Bloomberg School of Public Health who authored the study, told USA TODAY. She called the deaths following the Texas heartbeat law its “spillover effects on moms and babies.”
    Claims to be pro-baby.

    Functionally bans abortions.

Sees a rise in infant mortality.

REPUBLICANS ARE SO FUCKING GOOD AT WHAT THEY DO

Really, Republicans just seem like they want to make women suffer and don't care if that also means that more babies die. Which is weird for the "pro-baby" party, but whatever.

In the wake of the law's passage in Texas, more babies died before their first birthday, likely due to birth defects or genetic problems that wouldn't have allowed them to live, the study found. These pregnancies would typically have been terminated by abortion, according to researchers. The Texas heartbeat law does not provide exceptions for pregnancies involving such conditions. Mothers are legally obligated to carry these babies to birth under state law.
Literally born to die, baby. That's so fucking metal.

In the peer-reviewed Journal of the American Medical Association, Gemmill and researchers from Johns Hopkins and Michigan State University wrote that the Texas law was linked to "unexpected increases in infant and neonatal deaths" between 2021 and 2022. Prior research drew a correlation between the uptick in infant deaths and anti-abortion laws taking effect, however, no studies until now have attributed the fatalities directly to the restrictive laws forcing women to carry these pregnancies.

"Abortion care is an essential component of comprehensive healthcare, and when it is restricted, the human impacts are devastating," Wendy Davis, a senior adviser for Planned Parenthood Texas Votes, said in a statement. Davis, who filibustered for abortion rights when she was a Democratic state senator, noted that the study only covered 2022, not the results in 2023 and 2024 in the wake of a more restrictive abortion ban that came with the Dobbs decision. This "likely means the situation on the ground today is even more dire," Davis said.
Shocking stuff. Abortion is healthcare, no matter how much of a tantrum that Republicans want to throw over it.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott's office did not dispute the study's findings but defended the Republican-controlled state's anti-abortion record. This effort included the 2021 heartbeat law "to save the innocent unborn, and now thousands of children have been given a chance at life," Andrew Mahaleris, a spokesperson for Abbott, said in a statement to USA TODAY. He said the governor has taken "significant action to protect the sanctity of life" and offered resources to expectant mothers "so they can choose life for their child."

Anti-abortion advocates also didn't contest the uptick in infant deaths cited in the study. Advocates for the heartbeat law and other legislation to restrict abortions say such bans protect life. They say terminating a fetus with a terminal illness is “choosing to kill that child intentionally.” However, the overwhelming majority of such abortions happen before the fetus is viable.
So they still think they're doing a great job despite their policies resulting in more dead babies.

Modern American conservatism, baby. Intellectually bankrupt.

Amy O’Donnell, a spokesperson for Texas Alliance for Life, said the study’s findings didn’t come as a surprise. She said babies born with disabilities and even fatal anomalies deserve a chance at life, even if that means a newborn dies after birth from a condition doctors anticipated would be lethal. The death of a child is not easy, she acknowledged. She noted that her nonprofit offers resources for families grieving from such losses.

“In Texas, we celebrate every unborn child's life saved. We treasure the fact that our laws are protecting women's lives,” she said. “We don't apologize for the fact that we don't support discrimination against children facing disabilities or fatal diagnoses in or out of the womb. And that's the line that we just believe should not be crossed.”

Gemmill, of Johns Hopkins, said babies that died shortly after being born with birth defects "probably caused a lot of unnecessary trauma to families."
Why yes! Of course they're not the baby suffering from a debilitating, life-ending condition that will give them zero chance of life. It's someone else's baby that's suffering. And that suffering is very good according to these "pro-life" Republicans.

And the families who have to watch their newly born infant die in real-time, dealing with all the emotional trauma and financial burdens that come with it? Fuck them, lol. Maybe they shouldn't have gotten preggers if they weren't willing to watch their baby die while they potentially risk bankruptcy.

Duane questioned the claim by anti-abortion activists that Texas is a “pro-life” state, given the study's findings. “Women are hurting, families are hurting, babies are dying, and no one in the state is taking responsibility for any of that real human suffering,” she said.
After years of this, the suffering of these women, babies, and the families very much seems to be an intentional and willful policy goal of conservative Republicans.

The purpose of a system is what it does.

Republicans are pro-killing-babies. All their rhetoric otherwise is a cheap cover story worth less than nothing. When they get their way and implement the policies they want, more babies die. Do they get upset and reverse course? No, they double down. Because the intended goal is more dead babies.

Same for every pro-lifer out there. This is what your ideology represents. These are the outcomes you're pushing for. We see past your empty rhetoric.

It's straight up rage inducing that he would frame that as giving those women a "choice" when it's very much clear that they absofuckinglutely do not.

Like, seriously, there needs to be a paid attraction where Abbot's administration offers 100 bucks to any woman willing to punch him in the face. The line would be hundreds of miles long.

You will never guess which Judges voted to make it easier for public officials to receive gifts this morning.

Looking forward to the next Supreme Court decision, a 6-3 ruling that weirdos who taunt their neighbors with political flags are actually “very cool, according to the Constitution”.

Even before Dobbs, going back to 2020, more than half of the counties in Texas, primarily the rural areas, did not have any practicing OB/Gyn. It has gotten much worse since Dobbs. The poorer parts of Dallas and Houston are now without ready access to OB/Gyn. For every Kate Cox, who was able to go out of state for her treatment, there are 100 women of lesser financial means that were stuck in Texas.

If you are poor and need maternal/natal care, Texas is the last place you want to be.

Some old numbers which I doubt have changed much.

In 2019, nearly 1 in 5 Texans had no health insurance, double the national average. And the stats are worse for women of childbearing age — in 2017, more than a quarter had no health insurance, the highest rate in the nation.

Supreme Court appears poised to allow emergency abortions in Idaho for now

The U.S. Supreme Court on Wednesday "inadvertently and briefly" uploaded what it said was a "document" about a ruling in a high-profile case over Idaho's ban on abortions that reportedly indicates the court is poised to require the state allow emergency access — for now.
Idk if mistake or leak but who cares.

So if this is the actual ruling it will allow abortions for an emergency.

To me this is all public relations by the Supreme Court. I truly believe this is the right wing Justices trying to cover Trump and Republicans to show that the court and party are not too batshit crazy on abortion.

Why all speculation here, some pro-choice are celebrating this which I don't get at all. Once more this is not the Supreme Court being reasonable on abortion and even so; only in emergencies. Jeezus!

This may provide the legal cover that some hospitals, at least in Idaho, need to feel confident to perform medically necessary procedures and help some ladies out. I'd say that's a win even if we might theorize it's done so for political reasons.
