Southern states problem with high maternal and infant mortality rates is not new. Health care organizations have been raising alarms since the mid 2000s. So it only took Louisianna 15 years to start formulating a solution? I am willing to bet that California's high speed rail will finish construction before the southern states reduced their maternal and infant mortality rates to the same level as California.

I get a kick out of conservatives always falling back on the "you're just taking him out of context and looking for sound bites" excuse. They know their world view is awful so they dress it up in dog whistles and try to play it off as "rational discourse." I've never seen a group of bigger cowards in my life.

Today I learned access to transportation for women of color isn't a systemic issue.

I'll give you a hand. Calling Cassidy a racist because he misstated the "I say that not to minimize the issue, but to focus the issue as to where it would be." (actually in the cited interview, directly after the sound bite), is much different than calling Cassidy a racist because he didn't solve the South's 15-year-old problems with black maternal morality in his past 7 years in the Senate. And maybe you feel passionately enough about it to bring it to a thread on regional mortality over the decades, but I was responding to the flippant racism call from a sound bite nobody bothered to listen to merely two sentences later.

He's framing Louisiana's maternal mortality problems in terms of specifically addressing black maternal mortality. Unless you're really, truly wanting to challenge the statistics on why Louisiana lags other states. I swear people don't step back and realize their logic means Republicans must ignore the causes of minority health problems in order to dodge a racism charge.

1> "I say that not to minimize the issue, but to focus the issue as to where it should be" is dishonest double-talk. If you're moving the focus off racial inequities, it's to minimize the racial inequities in the discussion. Claiming that's not what you're doing when it is what you're doing just makes you either an idiot or (more likely) a liar. And spare me that he's trying to refocus it on those issues; by ignoring the full statistical spread and trying to just look at black maternal morality, rather than the discrepancies and inequities, he's looking for internal explanations, rather than the glaringly obvious systemic barriers that everyone else can easily see.

2> The problems aren't just the last 15 years. That's ridiculous.

3> Honestly trying to recognize and fix issues and failing due to political opposition is a far cry from just refusing to recognize those issues in the first place because you're a racist liar.

If your argument is that the death rate for black mothers is caused by genetics and not a lack of access to quality healthcare then you're making a racist argument. Louisiana is in the bottom 5 states in the country when it comes to quality healthcare, let alone maternal care. The statistics aren't exactly a mystery, dude.

No, your ancestry does have a role in your health. What ailments you may be more susceptible or resistant to. It's racists to rely on race to identify the factors but also racists to act like they do not exist and not adjust a patients care with their genetics in mind. Because you can't just determine someones genetic backgrounds by the color of their skin, you can't just make assumptions that say, two dark dark skinned people who you'd call black share recent common ancestry ie black American slaves. You can look at the person and say 'this person might carry the genes for sickle cell because they are black/dark skin, so we will test for that/adjust accordingly".

All basketballs are round but not all round balls are basketballs

A problem in medicine is that cultural, social, and genetic factors unique to black women in this case are ignored and can have a negative impact on their treatment. Example, black women are more likely to be be ignored, be viewed as being dramatic/pill shopping, when complaining about pain. They get denied pain treatment, which leads to stress on the body that might have been avoided, things that should have been addressed being overlooked. Your genetics play into how you respond to certain drugs - there are certain drugs that shouldn't given as the first option to, again black women, as the first choice due to the higher chance of complications and yet some physicians who "don't want to appear racists" will ignore warnings because "they don't want to be racists" or we never taught such things because someone didn't "want to appear racist".

Quality healthcare is addressing factors that may impact the treatments options of a patient, including their genetics. Genetics that can be expressed through their race. Literally just had this discussion with a doctor who was frustrated with other doctors.

I get what you're saying, but again, if your argument is that the death rate for black mothers in Louisiana is caused by genetics and not a lack of access to quality healthcare then you're making a racist argument. I'm not saying that genetics don't play a role in health. I'm saying it doesn't account for the disparity in maternal death rates in Louisiana, especially when so many of them are preventable. It's even worse when you then try to "control for race" when trying to justify why the rate is so egregious in the state you represent in the senate.

While genetics may play a part, it is so small it is insignificant you can use data from other countries where everyone has fairly more access to health care. It really broils down to lack of access to health care services and lack of training by doctors when it comes to people of color. It was Serena Williams I think who had issues with doctors believing her symptoms after the birth of her child she could have died. It's a systematic issue in the US, you can go down a very dark rabbit hole when it comes to racist medical training and lack of access in the US.

"A 2016 study found many white medical students wrongly believe Black people have a higher pain tolerance than white people. Of all the participants, 73% held at least one false belief about the biological differences between races.

Examples of these beliefs include Black people having thicker skin, less sensitive nerve endings, or stronger immune systems. The researchers note these beliefs are centuries old, and that some 19th-century doctors used them to justify the inhumane treatment of slaves.

These myths still have an impact today. In a previous study, Black children with appendicitis were less likely to receive appropriate pain medication than white children. The same was true in research on people with recurring cancer. "

    https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5915910/

"The cycle of preconception, antenatal, delivery, and postpartum care are closely linked and care at each phase across the continuum can impact severe maternal morbidity and mortality. The social significance of race is indisputable and racial disparities in maternal health have roots in inequalities in the provision of healthcare at the system level, the provider level, and the patient level.18"

    https://www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.1516047113

"Study 1 documented these beliefs among white laypersons and revealed that participants who more strongly endorsed false beliefs about biological differences reported lower pain ratings for a black (vs. white) target. Study 2 extended these findings to the medical context and found that half of a sample of white medical students and residents endorsed these beliefs. Moreover, participants who endorsed these beliefs rated the black (vs. white) patient’s pain as lower and made less accurate treatment recommendations. Participants who did not endorse these beliefs rated the black (vs. white) patient’s pain as higher, but showed no bias in treatment recommendations. These findings suggest that individuals with at least some medical training hold and may use false beliefs about biological differences between blacks and whites to inform medical judgments, which may contribute to racial disparities in pain assessment and treatment."

"African Americans, Native Hawaiians and Latin Americans have been impacted greatly by hypertension and diabetes due to chronic stress resulting from discrimination (Williams & Neighbors, 2001; Kaholokula et al, 2010; McClure et al, 2010).
Stress due to experiences of racism can contribute to adverse birth outcomes, when combined with the effects of general and maternal stress (Nuru-Jeter et al, 2009; Dominguez et al, 2008; Canady et al, 2008)."

Alarms were raised 15 years ago because the issue was becoming nationwide. The root causes dated back decades and were no mystery to anybody with half a brain. To see Bill Cassidy, a medical doctor, after ignoring the issue for years suddenly acted as if he cares is to say the least ingenious. In the light of the leaked Supreme Court document, we could even say convenient. BTW, the current MMR for white women in Louisianna is nothing to brag about either.

No, you're absolutely right man. I'm sure it was his goal to point out that Louisiana is a poverty-stricken, racist dumpster fire that underserves an entire group of its own people when he made the original statement. He's really just a woke SJW and the Dems are trying to cancel him because he's a Republican. It's all made up, why do cringe-libs always do this?

Or maybe he's just a fucking balloon head who made a racist statement and is trying to back peddle.

Funny they are so worried about who leaked their opinions and not the fact that the contents of their opinions implicates them in perjury during their own confirmation hearings.
Since we can't call out Trolls and Bad Faith posters and the Ignore function doesn't actually ignore it. Add
    "mmo-champion.com##li.postbitignored"
to your ublock or adblock filter to actually ignore ignored posters. Now just need a way to ignore responses to them as well.

I dont even particular get the worry here other than like being control freeks. Like Clarence Thomas is ostensible worried about the public trust in the courts and the courts reputation but he doesn't actually give a fuck about that.
