    Weapon-specific talents

    Should totally be a thing.

Even if it's just a few baseline class-specific passive effects that change based on what kind of weapon you're using.

Axes, swords, and maces used to have talents for warriors.

I think it'd be neat to do all weapons at once.

Maybe something simple like just each weapon type being tied to an existing talent, granting you access to it while youre wielding that weapon without having to spend a point on it.

It'd be nice to have a reason to choose a specific weapon type instead of just plain stats

Doubt it would happen, especially not now, when we have the door open with the idea of letting people reach and search for the look they want. I can't see weapon-specific talents happen.

I wouldn't mind a weapon-type benefit though. Maces get a chance of concussion (minor stun) / Crushing (Armor reduction), daggers a chance of haste / Bleeding, swords a chance of crit/bleeding, polearms a chance of mastery/thrust (knockback), etc.

We have (had?) That with monk's Jab ability. Its animation differs (differed?) Based on what type of weapon you're using.

If anything like that was offered, I'd prefer it be like Diablo 3's version where the weapon type offers a specific bonus. You don't have to re-talent, you just get a bonus based on type.

We had this back during the era of Vanilla WoW - Cataclysm talent trees.

From a PvP perspective, some talents were mandatory and other talent choices could bugger off in favor of the "must have" and "go to" choices, some of which were weapon-specific talents. It promoted the cookie cutter talent design that Blizzard (at that time) was trying to prevent. An example I can remember is the Combat Rogue talent for 1-handed mace stunning.

    No thank you.

    It used to be both.

    Both.

So like orcs got a passive +1% expertise with axes and fist weapons, but warriors had talents that only worked on certain weapons, like +1% crit while wielding axes or polearms.

It'd be cool if it was something that was just automatically tied to weapons, instead of needing to spec into it, honestly. Like all axes just naturally crit more than swords, etc.

Didn't we sort of have that with the Artifact weapons? Well it was more of a skill tree but it did differ depending on the weapon/spec.
I wouldn't mind more of that to be honest.

With transmog now, you could still mog an axe into a sword appearance and use whatever axe talent they give you. The only difference is that there's an actual reason to prefer maces over axes from endgame content. As of now it's just... Ah, yes, weapon, ilvl higher than my current one and I can use it, cool.

They should have like secondary/tertiary stats, but baked into the weapon type. All axes crit better than all maces, all daggers have a chance to deal bleeding damage, all swords have multistrike, something like that, yknow

Not really. Artifact talents were just spec-specific ones, that happened to be tied to a specific artifact weapon. Fury warriors for example didn't have the option to use anything but two-handed swords, and unlocking the axe appearance still kept the sword type and all of the same talents.

Spellcasters would get the short end of the stick.

They don't even use their weapons for spellcasting, they're literally stat-sticks.

To be honest, the concept is neat on paper, but as boring as the 'Maces and Hammers do 50% more damage to Undead' in Diablo 2. It sounds nice on paper but end up being fairly pointless once we're talking about any end-game progression gear or content. You're still gonna use your BIS weapon regardless of what the type is, and the extra 1% crit isn't gonna gonna feel any different to you than any passive racial you already have and don't care about.

you realize this was a part of the game before guild wars ONE even existed?

You could talent into weapon specializations. Spec + using weapon type gave the bonus. Maces was a chance to stun, swords attacking a second time, fists/daggers +crit%. You could also talent weapon expertise which gave +5 weapon skill but only for swords, fists and daggers. Why no maces? Nobody knows.

The problem with this is that one weapon bonus usually ends up being best and result in players being arbitrarily restricted in the weapons types you can use because of it. They would have to be very well balanced for that not to be a concern, and I don't think Blizzard deserves our trust that they would accomplish that.

I remember when Arms had that. Other than the infinitely-reoccurring sword RNG, it wasn't exactly thrilling.

A new system could make a better implementation of it, but... eh.

    Bad idea.

Because it forces you to change talents every time you get a different weapon upgrade. Got an axe but you are using a sword right now? Time to go change your talents just to use the new weapon.

    Nah.

Oh god... just what we need. Getting weapons is hard enough. Getting specific weapons on top of that... deary me.
Like, i would like that, but not with the loot system we got, which is a casino extravaganza.

    Nah.
Or perfectly serviceable weapon upgrades are unwanted because they're not the FotM weapon type.

When raid tier weapons feel bad to get it's not a win.
