Also just because his city has high crime, AGAIN, does not mean that throwing more police at it is the proper solution. He doesn't live in my city either. Him living in a city doesn't grant any insight over this issue that an expert wouldn't have better information and understanding of. We've thoroughly established that there are other measures that are far better. Insisting otherwise is either ignorance or folly.
His city doesn't even have high crime. There's a very low number of incidents per capita. If he wants to actually talk about NYPD protecting people, just point to the cops roughing up homeless people while the subway gets shot up a block away. Even still, Dems have to realize that Americans scare easily, and they need to watch their messaging on this.

It just creates more problems.
I know this is an old post, but I have to point out how the bolded part is incorrect. They absolutely are not trained like the military are. If every cop had to go through a 13 week bootcamp, then additional training, on top of all the things they have to learn as a cop? Then we wouldn't be seeing NEARLY as many fuck-ups as we are now, and not just from the drop-outs who can't handle it. Not to mention, I would hope that they would have the same sort of command structure and accountability as the military, meaning you'd be seeing people get roasted over the coals for doing shit like shooting civilians that are running away, etc.

Depends https://www.neighborhoodscout.com/ny/new-york/crime says that Manhattan where his work, NAN, seems to be located isn't that safe (only safer than 19% of US cities). And that is for Manhattan as a whole - it seems that NAN is an especially crime-prone part of the city.

Well, it's a bit stupid, in the "or anywhere" part. This problem is quite uniquely American, or at the least when the other Western countries are concerned. Our police are already "defunded", and has been for the longest time.

It'll be interesting to see if "defund the ____" is suddenly a "good slogan" now that it's serving Republican interests, at least.

Thing is, "Defund" has a longer history of usage for right wing policies. Defund the EPA, Defund Planned Parenthood, etc... That's why it makes the median voter so nervous.
But trying to explain marketing and branding makes you sell out.

Sure seems it is fine now that almost every Republican has tweeted it or has said it.

All of the posters who were vehemently against defund the police are now mysteriously absent from this thread.

    Who'da thunk it?
2014 Gamergate: "If you want games without hyper sexualized female characters and representation, then learn to code!"
2023: "What's with all these massively successful games with ugly (realistic) women? How could this have happened?!"

Yes, it surely is - and the US is sliding further backwards, as Trump said 'The Mob takes the 5th'.

As soon as institutions are perceived (and in some cases fact already are) politicized there's a real danger that it will create a vicious cycle, as in failed states, where people see (imagined or real) injustice and don't want to fix it, but instead ensure that they themselves benefit.

However, "defund the FBI" will likely soon disappear as a slogan and seems best discussed in the political threads.

Yes, it's a shame that the supreme court has been packed with fundie conservative judges who rule based on the "bible" and not the constitution, but at least Trump might face justice. We already got Alex Jones for the terrible things he did.

The product of their bad faith arguments coming to bite them in the ass.

And you have the people on the left who allowed them to control the narrative.

    Hate to see it.

    - - - Updated - - -

We've already established that 'defund the police' is not about abolishing police (unless you want to claim a very small group of people speak for everyone) and that attempts to changer the slogan were made, mainstream media and politicians allowed bad faith actors to steer the ship.

I don't see many people arguing the true intent of the moment, to reallocate funds for training/new class of responders. We have to beat keep being the "bad slogan" horse that died eons ago. I definitely have not seen any comments that suggest more funding means better law enforcement or that specialized training/divisions will somehow collapse law enforcement.

Now we have people, people who are actually unhinged, violent, yada yada, talking about ACTUAL ABOLISHMENT AND NOT JUST BAD MARKETING. They using the slogan "reasonable moderates" allowed them warp because those "reasonable moderates" validated the bad faith arguments.

Because this thread I assume is about your basic police officers, not the FBI. I find the Republicans that have been screaming Defund the FBI to be morons.

I think it's pretty obvious that republicans only support the police unless it's getting in their way evidenced by the Jan 6th insurrection and its fallout.

No, what stupid idiot would say "defund"?

No, you need to FUND YOUR DAMN SYSTEM!

You need to actually demand a longer education, and fill up the needed courses. There should be no badge or service until you've passed a 4+ year education.

Defunding the police is idiot talk, and does not solve the problem within the force, or within the people of the nation - just makes it worse.

Structure. Build up before it crumbles down.

The left: Defund the police to make it less militarized in urban areas, and more responsive to the minority communities it serves.

The right: Defund the police because they're going after our God-King Trump for committing crimes.

You can't make this stuff up.
