Alabama Sen. Tuberville equates descendants of enslaved people to criminals

Sen. Tommy Tuberville, R-Ala., falsely compared descendants of enslaved people to criminals during his speech on Saturday, drawing criticism that his remarks were racist.

The lawmaker was invited to speak at a pro-Trump rally in Minden, Nevada to support Republican candidates ahead of November's midterm elections. In an overwhelming white crowd, Tuberville criticized Democrats for being "pro-crime."

"They want crime because they want to take over what you got. They want to control what you have. They want reparations because they think the people that do the crime are owed that," Tuberville added. "Bullsh*t! They are not owed that."

Reparations refer to compensation for those who have suffered wrongdoing. Over the years, there's been growing support to offer reparations for Black Americans whose ancestors were enslaved as a way to address the lingering effects of slavery.

Last spring, a bill to study reparations for slavery had the support of more than 170 Democratic co-sponsors. A House committee voted to advance the legislation but it has yet to be considered by the full House of Representatives.

The Democrats do not have an explicit policy surrounding reparations, though some prominent party members have advocated for the idea.

In a press statement, NAACP President Derrick Johnson called Tuberville's comments "flat out racist, ignorant and utterly sickening."

"His words promote a centuries-old lie about Black people that throughout history has resulted in the most dangerous policies and violent attacks on our community," Johnson added.

Tuberville's office did not immediately respond to NPR's request for comment.
Who could have guessed electing a football coach would result in electing an ahistorical racist who makes shit up?

This is why you don't treat elections as purely popularity contests and why we should be voting for the quality of the candidate rather than if they're a "D" or an "R".

As brilliantly highlighted by former NRA spokeswoman Dana Loesch, who has said this on her Twitter account and elsewhere, it seems that Republicans don't care who they elect and only care about getting a majority with people who will rubber-stamp whatever leadership wants.

This isn't about getting candidates that are competent and will fight for you, who knows how government works, what "policy" means, and actually hires a legislative directors, this is purely about "getting power" which is, apparently for Republicans, literally the beginning and end of their understanding of politics.

And bonus points for her attacking the mother of one of Walker's children and one of his children.

Though real, why does it keep seeming like Republicans keep saying overtly racist, factually incorrect shit?

Because their voters are complicit. It's a party defined by being white supremacists. Overt racism isn't a negative, which is why he won't lose votes for this shit, when in any decent society that opposes racism, this statement alone would be enough to permanently remove him from office for lack of ethical conduct.

If Republicans want to no longer be presented as white supremacists, they need to first stop voting for white supremacists. If you're voting for a white supremacist, you are a white supremacist. That's what the word means.

We're well past the point where conservatives were afraid of saying the quiet part out loud. That started happening circa 2016. Now the GQP is playing chicken with how racist they can get without it being "too far" for their base. So far they haven't found the bottom of that barrel. And probably never will. Well not unless they make a racist joke about white people.
2014 Gamergate: "If you want games without hyper sexualized female characters and representation, then learn to code!"
2023: "What's with all these massively successful games with ugly (realistic) women? How could this have happened?!"

Let's not forget his statements in regards to getting rid of Food Stamps, citing that the state (or perhaps the Feds?) can't afford it, and that those people need to "get back to work", completely ignoring the fact that in order to get Food Stamps you need to be employed. He's not only a racist, he is blatantly anti-poor/working class.

So this was clear racism. Let's talk about Tubberville.

Tommy Tubberville was an American College Football coach for 30 years. A lesson for those not familiar with our "amateur" college athlete system. College football is a billion dollar business. Universities and especially coaches make millions off athletes, who the majority are African Americans, who were not paid. Basically where the athlete is the driving force to the entertainment of football, it was free labor.

Tubberville saying they all want reparations, while he made money of these athletes is amazing. I guess any athlete who played for him must really rethink their collegiate years. Lou Holtz another former coach is the same, not as racist and if you listen to many coaches while not out front racism, shows they don't care about the African American athlete and what their family members suffer at home and neighborhood. They just want them to perform and win and make money.
Democrats are the best! I will never ever question a Democrat again. I LOVE the Democrats!
