    Unrest in Iran

With everything else going on, this seems to have largely been ignored, but there is growing unrest and protests going on in Iran.

The cause was the death of a 22 year old Kurdish-Iranian woman 5 days ago after being assaulted by 'morality police' in custody for not wearing her hijab properly. Since then there have been 5 days of growing protests, with women burning their hijabs in protest as well as the occupation of government buildings and the tearing down of pictures of the supreme ruler. There are also videos of protesters catching members of the morality police and other government thugs and basically kicking the shit out of them.

The government, of course, is blaming foreign actors for stirring up the trouble.

There are clashes between protestors and government thugs in places - like this video.

While it'd be great if iran became more secular again, I don't see that as an ending w/out the revolutionary guard shooting hundreds of people before that happens like they did in 2009.

Basically. The article mentioned that live rounds were already being used against protestors, and that some have been killed.

The regime is blaming those shootings on terrorists essentially. The IRGC basically took responsibility in 2009, though they denied torturing people.

Iran has a lot of practice beating the dissidence out of its population so I do expect it to be bloody. Five dead already is the claim.

There is a lot of pent up anger due to numerous factors, including an economy really struggling, so it seems the hijab incident was just the trigger for it all.

these are videos taken from this weeks' unrest in iran. which has been going on for a few days now. I'll try to put the verified videos here.

    https://twitter.com/FridaGhitis/stat...ZW4PvkGTP2ILyg

cop goes to taze a young protester, gets yeeted and deleted by bystanders.

    https://twitter.com/FridaGhitis/stat...J4nnBO_uMzBiqw

this is probably the most heartwarming video about the unrest. women are taking off their headscarves, veils that are mandory to be worn in public, and burning them on bonfires to protest the mandatory hijab.

    https://twitter.com/AlinejadMasih/st...J4nnBO_uMzBiqw

"Women of Iran-Saghez removed their headscarves in protest against the murder of Mahsa Amini 22 Yr old woman by hijab police and chanting:

    death to dictator!"

The people are protesting the gender apartheid that has been maintained by the regime since its very inception. The protests are widespread across the nation, with multiple cities witnessing scenes of clashes. more than that, the people are protesting the ruling regime itself and demanding it's downfall.

    https://twitter.com/bai_mina/status/...NR-WmocK27tMKg

unrest in Kish, a small island south of Iran, which is considered a vacation destination/free trade island. people have gathered and demand the end of islamic republic.

https://twitter.com/IranProtestsCom/...NR-WmocK27tMKg city of Rasht, protesters are attacking an ambulance used by security forces as a disguise car to move their detainees out of protesting areas, which is a common tactic used by the regime in past protests. they are seen pulling security forces out of the ambulance and chasing them.

    https://twitter.com/Ancommiey/status...J4nnBO_uMzBiqw

plainclothes police tries to detain a demonstrator, gets spotted, then attacked by bystanders.

    https://twitter.com/AsaadHannaa/stat...J4nnBO_uMzBiqw

security forces. plainclothes police, are seen being attacked and tackled by people as they retreat.

    https://twitter.com/mamadporii/statu...NR-WmocK27tMKg

young girl is seen standing against police and arguing with officer. dont know what city this is.

    https://twitter.com/DTehrany/status/...CNjaHTF2BOERDg

abandoned cop cars in a street. young girls climbing on top and shouting.

    https://twitter.com/nntaleb/status/1...J4nnBO_uMzBiqw

city of kerman, woman sits on top of utility box among a crowd and cuts her hair in sign of protest.

Its interesting to point that this is nationwide, in many large cities and small towns, and the people are getting bolder every year. used to be peaceful demonstrations most of the time, which would then be attacked by police. But these demonstrations are larger, and the people seem to not hesitate to fight back.

there are many more videos of the unrest, some show police brutality and regime's paramilitary forces shooting at protesters with live rounds. some are too graphic and i dont want to post them here, but I will try to put most of what I can find, especially the ones showing cops and these regime goons getting their ass kicked in heart-warming ways.

This might be the beginning of the end for the islamic republic, all for the better.

They'll likely just mow them down, and use that as an object lesson to their womenfolk who might think.

Dang that's impressive that so many Iranian citizens want more freedoms. Hopefully the hardline elites of Iran will ease up on the excessive rules they put on the people.

Also hopefully the protestors can send the right message to their leaders without damaging property, promoting lawlessness in general, and disrupting people's jobs and what not, since that part doesn't really help the cause.

Yes, because that's how authoritarians respond to protests and dissent?

Literally impossible. Many of the protests are violating the laws by their very nature, because the laws are unjust and being protested against.

Good for them, I hope they kick Ayatollah and his zealots out.

the IRGC are so insidious would be hard to see change coming without them.

Will probably end with a few hundred getting shot and a few more imprisoned. Grim when gangsters take over the country.

Protests and deaths continue to increase. The government says 17 have died so far but human rights group says it is at least 31. The authorities are blaming all the deaths on 'rioters.'

Meanwhile, CNN journalist Christiane Amanpour was meant to have an interview with the Iranian president in New York but cancelled after he demanded she wear a headscarf.

I'm hoping the best for them. Can't help but to see the irony of some conservatives throwing up their support. Anyone remember the 80s?

Iranian protesters are numerous, many cities, small and large, are seeing protesters taking over government and police buildings. protesters are even resisting in the face of live ammunition fire and heavy riot police presence.

Anonymous has been very active against the Iranian government in the past week when the protests began, they have officially declared war on the Iranian Regime. they have since then taken down multiple government websites, taken data from government website and then posted them on public, these include news articles, information on officials and security members, the channels they use online to identify and crackdown on protests.

There are multiple reports coming from the city of Oshnavieh in Western Azerbaijan province of Iran. People have taken full control of the city, government forces on full retreat. government facilities abandoned.

For the first time in the past 50 years, The Islamic Republic has officially lost a city to protesters. Protesters are still resisting and pushing back government forces and militias.

Iran President demands American woman bow down to Islam

Veteran journalist Christiane Amanpour says an interview with Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi was scrapped after he insisted she wear a headscarf, the focus of major protests in the country.

  17. #17
Unfortunately, as has been shown in the past, the authorities are willing to massacre as many thousands as it takes to retain power.

It would take a serious defection from the military and security forces to change that.

  18. #18
I hope this can lead to some change over there. I'll never forget watching a documentary, I think it was in the late 00's, about a group of activists fighting a case on behalf of a 16 year old girl who had been raped, thus committing a crime against chastity (apparently it was her third strike) and had been sentenced to death. Ultimately they failed, and they brought a crane into the street and hung her. The rapist was not executed. To be so derranged by your "faith" that as a society you can treat your daughters like that was just sickening. It seems that mentality is still alive and well among those in power, it is heartening to see that there are many in the general public who reject that kind of barbaric thinking.

Slightly tangential, but that is par for the course for Iran. A few years back, their president declined a dinner invitation to the Elysée Palace because there would have been wine on the table. Shocking, right?

Good luck to all the brave men and especially women of Iran that are protesting. Iran used to be a wonderfully progressive and free place. With any luck, this is a step towards some of that again.
