Yes that’s what every one and there mother was Claiming at the time, and it never had any backing.

Here from the Q3 report which started right after 9.1 release.

they launched classic tbc that summer. also, this part: "With deep engagement across both Classic and Modern, WoW's overall subscriber base is stronger than we typically see at this point after a Modern expansion launch." means that classic+retail had overall more players than any modern expansion did at that point in time. classic was basically covering retail's ass in that period
