Frankly, my complaints have been gradually shifting away from thinking that they're writing a story that doesn't fit the Warcraft setting, and more that they're just struggling to write a story period. I'm not expecting Metzen to make a huge difference, but it feels like most of the problems stem from a lack of direction, so who knows.
How I see it is that people want cosmic storylines, but experienced through the lens of the familiarity of Azeroth and the characters we know.
Legion worked because we mostly stuck to Azeroth. Learning more about the world, and saw the effects the invasion had on places and people we knew.
Shadowlands didn't because while the topic was expected, you didn't get a solid frame of reference to how this affects Azeroth and the people there.
The world revamp dream will never die!
I hope Avaloren is not true. It sounds like a patch zone. Fitting for 10.3 if it happens. Argus and Ny'alotha were much bigger deal and we got them in a single patch. I would personally be dissappointed in Avaloren being a continent, but will still play like always. I'm just afraid K'aresh doesn't get the same treatment as Argus.

Not like the Christie Golden hiring inspired a whole new level of confidence. I'd say the story writing got worse since she's been hired. Not sure if that's because of the lack of unifying vision that Metzen brought or the whole "upper level management" fiasco that was making its way through the company. Or maybe both.
But yeah...there seem to be a whole host of reasons why things went wrong, story-wise.
I'm not even 30, though I'm close.
I do feel like a WoW boomer though when I run into people who are teenagers, starting to play in the past few expacs.
I remember when Catababy was a thing. Now those are some of the most experienced players. Vanilla isn't the end all be all but so much has changed. Hell I still have my original 4 or 5 discs.

Avaloren or Revamp.
Doesn't matter. It's all gonna slap.
