Dawn of the Infinite, in retrospect, feels like such a massive turning point that I can't help but think that their plans changed completely there. Up until that point, everything pointed towards Iridikron as the final boss, or maybe Murozond- and the devs claimed that we would be able to figure out the final boss after finishing Vault. But then instead, Iridikron teased the Worldsoul Saga (which, unless I'm mistaken, was Metzen's idea, and from what I can find he first returned to Blizzard just after Dragonflight released so it clearly wasn't the original plan) and left while Murozond was resolved quickly.
Fyrakk, up to that point, had always felt like just a crazy underling that we'd fight in a mid-expansion raid, but suddenly we got an attempt to build him up as the final boss. On top of that, most of the other plotlines we got since then felt rushed- Ysera's return amounted to absolutely nothing. Vyranoth's redemption- while something I expected from the start- was executed so abruptly that it feels fake. The Red Dragonflight still never got a major arc like the other four flights, just Alexstrasza herself helping out in the Green arc. Smolderon suddenly showing up to die, with just a few lines about Fyrakk tricking him. The big quest to restore the Aspects was forgotten, and instead it just kind of happened at the end of the raid. It feels like they were rushing to resolve everything they set up, way to quickly to do any of it right.
I really feel like this was all supposed to end up as a four-tier, standalone expansion, with Iridikron as the final boss. Ysera would have taken the focus in the current patch instead of Alexstrasza, Vyranoth's redemption would have been more drawn out, with her, Alexstrasza, and the Reds taking the focus for the final tier, etc... but then Metzen came back with his Saga idea and wanted to use Iridikron for it, so the writers had to scramble to resolve everything without the final boss.
To be clear, even if this is the case, Dragonflight's ending was disappointing. But if there is a reason for it, like this... I really hope their plans for the Saga make it worth it.
