That all kind of makes sense for a potential 11.2. zone. It would round out the story of the start of TWW, make sense why the Sons of Lothar of all people are so prominent (remember the christmas comic about them?).

So, what if the ethereals unleash the energies of the dark heart on K'aresh, with it, the broken remnants of Dalarn, and also Galakronds corruption? Epic giant dragon fight in space?

I wonder if Xal had Iridikron get that as a kind of "poison pill" in case anyone stole it from her. I don't know how she'd "purify" it before she did what she wanted, but maybe whatever the Ethereals power up with the heart will get corrupted because it came with a shit ton of decay from Galakrond's corpse.

Unless this was all according to plan to get the DH stolen and then someone else to use it and get punked. But that would make Xal another shitty 7D chess villain.

Not necessarily, they've pushed a build to an encrypted endpoint and shipped it later on in the day before.

major? we don't know. the roadmap says some story is coming with patch 11.1.7. i expect a couple of quests like the ones we got in 10.1.7

Because the title can refer to both the Arathi and Sons of Lothar, who all appeared launch and then took a vacation. If they are the main characters of 11.2 plus Faerin it would be a great nostalgia bait thing.

You say that, but it's a small part of launch questing and then Orweyna quiet quits 11.1 with no fanfare, not even being featured in the finale cinematic.

There is enough in launch and 11.1 for there to be evidence of an original narrative pathway to Rootlands, but the finale cinematic and no overt Rootlands tease at the end of 11.1 point towards thing going somwhere else.

This all feels shockingly like how much Tyr was built up in DF launch and patch stories and then... clearly cut from the expansion. Again a decision connecting to Metzen as it was confirmed he changed Tyr's story.

She's all throughout the 11.1 question? She's tertiary character in it of course, but her whole thing is being against the Black Blood, so that's where she shows up. She isn't important to the goblin side so why would she show up there? Plus we've got the other haranir to look forward to and the Black Blood issue is clearly not sorted

Ethereals, on the other hand? Absent for the entire expansion before one momentary wrench-throwing into Xal's plans and. That's it

But is the Haranir's secret the buildup of the expansion or just a buildup? I think there's an easy argument there that the Ethereals have just as much (if not more) of a buildup in 11.0 with Ky'veza and some of the Ethereals in Azj'Kahet along with 11.1's campaign and ending cinematic.

They don't have anywhere near the buildup Orweyna has. Like, outside of the absolute questionable story decision of "Okay we're going to save Azeroth by: Leaving Azeroth entirely and going to this planet that is literately not a threat to Azeroth to not deal with Xal'atath, our big bad, but instead some void dude mentioned back in the description of the first boss of a TBC dungeon who has never made any threats or moves towards Azeroth", the haranir have quite a few appearances down in Azj-Kahet that starts the mystery of 'where are these weird troll'

And, well, let's be honest: Orweyna's in the expansion trailer. Not Locus Walker, not Alleria, but Orweyna. She's clearly being set up for something and there's absolutely zero evidence they've side-lined her or scrapped her content, not to mention everything is pointing at the haranir being the guardians of that one world tree that Aman'thal destroyed which means Rootlands/The Cradle's been built up with that book in Emerald Dream, and "Look at this massive tree we had to keep secret from the Titans" would make a big capstone to the Earthen's whole story about now finding freedom from their edicts themselves, to say nothing of the dichotomy in them, in turn, helping the haranir finding freedom from their oaths and being able to help Azeroth in a wider form

Ethereal don't have any connection to anything that's happened this expansion outside of one boss fight in Nerub'ar. Going to K'aresh would be an awful story beat and absolutely out of the blue at the moment, on an expansion that's been fairly good at being self contained and following up on itself. It doesn't follow any of the built up themes, its not related to mysteries under Azeroth, it just makes no sense to suddenly jump half way across the galaxy when the expansion starts with looking at The Big Sword In Silithus and then just, doing nothing for Azeroth

Have there been any major short stories in the modern wow era that didn't focus on either a playable faction leader of villain?

I'm thinking locus walkers short story will be set up for playable etherals considering how connected etherals and void elves are and how we know void elves are going to play a major role next expac

We had Sunwalker Dezco's story back in MoP. Great story and all but Dezco sure isn't Baine. He's not even the Sunwalker's leader, that's Aponi

Regardless though, we kinda have. More evidence for haranir being playable than ethereals, in that haranir have a player capable model and the ethereal don't. The big ethereal model update isn't player compatible, they're just NPC models
